When New Orleans native Robi Robichaux returned home to Algiers after an 18-year stint in Orlando, Fla., he wasn’t sure how to translate his theme park focused career in his hometown. But it was through taking the Friends of the Cabildo tour guide class that Robi gained a whole new profession.

“On day one of the tour guide class, they tell you that you’ll meet your new best friends,” says Robi. “And they were absolutely right.”

Robi says that the tour guide classes run by the Friends of the Cabildo are truly a unique experience. The Friends of the Cabildo Walking Tour Guide program provides intensive and comprehensive training for tour guides. The program provides an intensive overview of New Orleans history, architecture and culture. Once a neighborhood of Black owned businesses and residences, the area was “redeveloped” mid 20th century for a Civic Center and street reconfiguration. Remnants of jazz history persist among repurposed office buildings and colorful murals. Major projects underway include the Charity Hospital redevelopment, hotel conversions and preservation of 19th century residences. Join the Friends of the Cabildo to examine the fascinating mix of adaptive reuse, historic preservation and Black history in the “Old Back of Town”.

A unique tour of geographic history and architectural highlights; Esplanade Avenue was designed in the French style of grand boulevards as a garden suburb for wealthy Creoles escaping the ‘old city’. Extended block by block from Fort St Charles at the Mississippi River to the future City Park, the street was built despite objections of the Bayou Road landowners whose houses were often in the way. Esplanade Ave. would intersect with colonial and pre-colonial Native American pathways that are still present in the tangled street grids. This new tour will explore by foot a truly unique area of the city. Your guide is a 40 year resident on the Bayou Road who restored and curated the "Derbes Mansion!"
