Hon’ble Lyonpo met with H.E. Mr. Cameron Dean MacKay, the Ambassador of Canada to Bhutan who is in the country on a farewell visit. Lyonpo thanked the Ambassador for the efforts in strengthening the bilateral relations between Bhutan and Canada. Lyonpo wished the Ambassador well in his future endeavours.

His Majesty The King conferred Red Scarf to Yab Dhondup Gyaltshen, Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen’s father, today.

Now the Chief Pilot at Drukair, Yab Dasho Dhondup Gyaltshen has served in the national airline for 35 years, and spearheaded a multitude of timely initiatives to further Bhutan’s aviation industry.

Yab Dasho Dhondup Gyaltshen also oversaw the transformation of Paro Airport, which has received widespread accolades from the global travel industry.

Yab Dasho Dhondup Gyaltshen is married to Yum Sonam Chuki and they have five children.

On the joyous occasion of the 44th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty The King, the officers and staff of the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Bhutan to the United Nations and the Consulate General of the Kingdom of Bhutan in New York joins the nation in offering our warmest felicitations and prayers for His Majesty’s wellbeing and long life.

On 17th October 2023, Her Majesty Tseyring Pem Wangchuck, the Queen Mother of Bhutan was presented the Champion of Rising Leaders Award by Teton Science School for Her Majesty’s dedication to environmental conservation and for inspiring and nurturing the next generation of environmental leaders.

The Champions of Rising Leaders Award is in acknowledgement of Her Majesty’s efforts in promoting sustainability that has been a profound source of inspiration for countless individuals and organisations worldwide. Through Her Majesty's work as co-chair of the Bhutan Foundation, her support of the Bhutanese philosophy of Gross National Happiness has helped transform Bhutan into a renowned model for sustainability and overall well-being.

Bhutan was also presented the Murie Spirit of Conservation Award for its dedication to environmental preservation. The award is in recognition of Bhutan’s firm commitment to environmental preservation and for upholding the conservation of environment as one of the four pillars of Gross National Happiness. The award also recognizes Bhutan's steadfast commitment to preserving its natural heritage which serves as an inspiring example for nations across the globe by setting a high standard for environmental stewardship, leaving a legacy for generations to come.

Established in honour of the late leaders of the American conservation movement, Olaus and Margaret “Mardy” Murie and Adolph and Louis Murie, this annual award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated an exemplary commitment to the protection of wildlife and wild places.

A panel discussion on Bhutan’s environmental conservation was held following the award ceremony. The discussion with conservation panelists from the Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN), Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation (BTFEC), Bhutan Ecological Society (BES), World Wildlife Fund-Bhutan (WWF-Bhutan) and Bhutan Foundation was moderated by Judge Margaret McKeown, Chairperson of the Murie Ranch Committee of Teton Science School.

The Award Ceremony which took place at the Center for the Arts, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, United States of America was attended by local government officials, philanthropists, conservationists, local community and board members, staff and students of the Teton Science School.

The Consulate General of the Kingdom of Bhutan, New York wishes to inform all Bhutanese living in the United States of America and Canada on the launch of the Gyalsung National Service website: www.gyalsung.bt on 9 October 2023. All eligible youths can now register for the Gyalsung Training programme through this website.

The inaugural Gyalsung Training programme is scheduled to commence on 1st September 2024. All Bhutanese born in 2005 (attaining age18 in 2023) are eligible to participate in this training program.

The Consulate General of the Kingdom of Bhutan, New York, invites all eligible Bhutanese living in the United State of America and Canada to sign up for the inaugural Gyalsung training through the Gyalsung Registration Portal - https://gyalsung.bt/schedule-for-2024/

Why Gyalsung?

🇧🇹 Bhutan has witnessed monumental changes over the past two decades as a result of major economic and political reforms. But there are new challenges in the forefront: rising youth unemployment; challenge of substance abuse among the youth; emerging socio-economic disparities; declining food self-reliance; growing external economic imbalances, etc.

🇧🇹 The failure to address these challenges in a timely manner could undo the achievements made thus far and undermine our national vision. As a small nation with numerous challenges and on the cusp of embarking on ambitious transformation, the potential of every individual must be harnessed to enhance economic prosperity, collective wellbeing and national security.

🇧🇹 With the above considerations, Bhutan will launch the Gyalsung in 2024 with the objective of endowing every young Bhutanese with the personal attributes/discipline and professional skills needed to succeed in the 21st century. This will help them become active participants in nation-building but also help pave their own paths in life.

🇧🇹 Designed as a collective endeavor, the Gyalsung will provide opportunities for all sections of society (from government organizations and autonomous agencies, the armed forces, educational institutions, parents, teachers, and individuals), to play an active part in helping shape the youth for their roles as active citizens of Bhutan. It will be a platform through which the legacy of shouldering our national responsibilities will be passed on from one generation to the next.
