The DPNA (Disabled Passenger with Intellectual or Developmental Disability Needing Assistance) code was introduced by The International Air Transport Association over a decade ago.
The DPNA CODE communicates to the airline that the passenger will require assistance or special preferences during their travels.

A lot of parents used it and majority was happy with it as it worked with almost all the airlines and airports in USA & Europe but when it comes to Middle East and South Asia it does not as much but still pretty good.

Most Important Advice: Get a stamped letter from your medical provider stating the diagnosis of the person and detailed requirements to assist with traveling.

Here is experience of family traveled recently to the Middle East; In this case the family before traveling obtained letter from the primary pediatrician stating the child is on Autism spectrum and requires assisting with checking in & out, not to stay in long lines, early boarding & departing the plane and any other travel matters the person requires.

& Here is How was the Experience with Etihad & Saudi airlines
Overall
Etihad Airways
gets triple AAA ✅️✅️✅️

SAUDIA AIRLINES الخطوط السعودية gets only 1 A ✅️❌️❌️

1) when they called Customer service call center in USA, Etihad representative was very knowledgeable of the code and applied to the reservation and added child meal (which wasn't available on board🤔) and the phone conversation took less than 2 minutes
Versus Saudi Airlines long conversation to explain the code to the representative who had no idea about it and in End they settle down for "meet and assist Request" to the reservation as DPNA couldn't be found.

2) at the Airport; Etihad from check in Counter to the gate counter to the flight attendants made it very easy to check in and boarding priority with offering all help
Versus Saudi airlines 80% of the staff from the Check in counter to gate counter to Flight attendants has to question the disability of the child and has to ask supervisor if they can accommodate even after presenting the letter from the doctor (obviously the only disability they know is a person on wheelchair; No knowledge of the DPNA CODE)

3) on the airplane
Etihad flight attendants frequently asked if the child needed anything and accommodate any unusual requests like can you fill his favorite cup with juice).
Versus Saudi crew nothing more the usual hospitable service for everyone.

4) the child meal was missed from both airlines but Saudi has pizza

On a side Note; in Mekka the Saudi National guards were very understanding and Helpful of the special needs "Despite the firmness they are famous for and the famous phrase " move Haji from here 😄"
like let the stroller inside Elmasjid El Haram and even watch it until the family did the 7 rounds "Tawaf" inside the plate of 🕋 and came Back to use the stroller in the Sa"ai in desinagted area for wheelchair and stroller and that was blessing.

In Nutshell use the DPNA CODE and educate people and staff about it.

HOW CAN YOU HAVE THE WHOLE BEACH JUST FOR YOUR SPECIAL FAMILY ?🤔
1) Have Special one in your family loves you and knows you love them back even more ❤️💙
2)Do your best to enjoy your special life no matter how hard it gets.
3) live in amazing Town with amazing people and staff.

That's what happens couple of weeks ago at overlook beach Town of Babylon - Government
It was Tuesday "it's our day off" and we took our special needs son to the beach after he came back from his summer school but by the time we arrived and just jumped in the water a big dark clouds storm start rolling In thundering and the life guards have to shut the beach off for safety; everyone start running to their cars and left but our son won't let us leave the parking lot (he knew it's his only chance this week before mommy and Daddy go back to work in the cafe) so we had to wait in parking lot chasing seagulls and wild rabbits for an hour and half untill the lifeguards re-open the beach just for us.

It was special memorable Day we wouldn't have it; if it wasn't for the determination of our special Son and Go above and beyond life guards of Town of Babylon staff 🙏
