The last Sunday in June is celebrated in NYC to mark the start of the LGBTQIA+ rights movement and remind people how powerful they are when they come together for a cause.

As May draws to a close, we'd be remiss to not acknowledge the end of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. AAPI month began in 1977 when Congress designated the first ten days of May to commemorate the history and contributions of Asian American communities here in the U.S. The effort was led by Representative Frank Horton of New York and Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawai'i. The observance evolved into a month--the same month in which the first Japanese immigrants came to the U.S. in 1843.

Happy Solar Eclipse! Today, April 8th at around 2:00 PM EST the moon will pass in front of the sun, causing a total eclipse of the sun visible throughout North America. All over, people are having watch parties and traveling to have the best seat in the house to catch this special event. Happy Lunar New Year from Underscore! 2024 is the year of the Dragon. The Dragon represents authority, dignity, honor, success, luck and capacity. Each animal represented on the lunar calendar occurs once every 12 years. The Lunar New Year follows the moon cycles and the date can vary each year landing between January and February. This year is the first year New York has recognized it as a statewide holiday.

On behalf of Underscore, we wish you a Happy Black History Month. Started by Carter G. Woodson in 1926 as Negro History Week. February was chosen for many reason including a way of honoring Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln for their role in abolishing slavery. Since it's inception, Black History Month has had a theme focusing on different areas that Black Americans have contributed to.

Today marks the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Dr. King is know for his work during the Civil Rights Movement championing desegregation and Civil Rights for all people. Observed on the third Monday in January, Martin Luther King Jr. Day , legislation was initially introduced to Congress in 1968 with its first observation occurring in 1986.

In an effort to honor Dr. King's legacy, we suggest partaking in the following activities:

Volunteer--take a moment to give back to participate in community care. Give back to those less fortunate if even for an hour

Read--take sometime to educate yourself on Dr. King and his legacy.

Take action--research a cause important to you. Make an effort to spread the word or participate in protest or reach out to your local legislators.
