Summertime magic comes alive through art, featuring Coney Island! 🎨🎡🌊

We're thrilled to showcase this stunning mural created by our talented young artists at P.S. 84 Jose de Diego, A Magnet School for the Arts and Sciences in Brooklyn. This project is a beautiful representation of Community-Word Project's mission to empower students through creative expression.

The mural captures the essence of Coney Island's summer charm - from the iconic amusement park rides to the bustling boardwalk and sunny beaches. But it's more than just a pretty picture. This mural is a testament to the power of collaborative art in building community and fostering a sense of pride and belonging among our students.

Through projects like these, we're not just teaching art - we're nurturing future leaders, thinkers, and community builders. Every brushstroke represents a story, a dream, and a voice waiting to be heard.

We'd love to hear your thoughts! What's your favorite summer memory? How do you think art projects like these impact our communities?

Our partner org is offering an incredible storytelling series next week geared towards artists!

The Story Exchange highlights our shared humanity. Through the exchange of personal narratives we see the world and ourselves with empathy.

Our N4 Artists Network Story Exchange is specifically designed for anyone who identifies as an artist. During our debrief, we’ll explore how the Story Exchange can inform our individual and collective practice as artists.

The theme for Tuesday, May 28th is “Inspiration” — Who or what has inspired you as an artist? Where do you go for inspiration? Who has been inspired by your work?

The theme for Thursday, May 30th is “Change” — What is the most significant change you’ve made in your life? What happened the last time you resisted change? When were you changed by a work of art?

Join us to share your story! You’ll hear it told back to you in the first person and you’ll tell your partner’s story as if it were your own.

As always, you can register for the workshop by clicking the link in our bio, selecting “Take a workshop with the TAP Alliance,” and scrolling down to our May events!

We are so proud of our TAP Trainees! During last Saturday’s workshop, they facilitated in groups the lesson plans they’ve designed as part of a larger curriculum they are developing.

We created masks adorned with customized affirmations, experimented with a singing bowl opening ritual, drew our responses to Ntozake Shange’s poetry, wrote song hooks on environmental awareness, created “collages” with musical instruments, danced poems about our names— and much more. We were very moved by their innovation and dedication to their teaching practices!

Now they begin their internships or externships— and only two months until graduation!

Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow! Join us for a workshop in INTERPLAY, an active, creative approach to unlock the wisdom of your body using storytelling, movement & voice!

*Workshop alert for next Tuesday!!* Free registration link in our bio under “Take a workshop with the TAP Alliance!”

Interplay is an active, creative way to unlock the wisdom of your body. In this 2 hour workshop open to TAP trainees and all teaching artists and adminstrators connected to the TAP Alliance, we will engage in introductory Interplay practices designed for connection, catharsis, and play. Then, we will reflect on the ways in which these practices can enhance our work as teaching artists.

The workshop will take place at Abrons Arts Center in the Underground Theatre. Wear comfortable clothes :) Reach out to Libby at [email protected] with any questions surrounding the workshop and what to expect.

More about Interplay:

InterPlay is easy, fun, and life changing. It is based in a series of incremental “forms” that lead participants to movement and stories, silence and song, ease and amusement. In the process, we discover the wisdom in ourselves and our communities.

InterPlay integrates body, mind, heart and spirit. Life has become so fragmented. InterPlay helps to pull everything back together so we get more of what we want.

InterPlay is devoted to fun. It teaches the language and ethic of play in a deep and powerful way. If you are convinced that seriousness is the path to inner wisdom, then you might want to look elsewhere. If you would like to become a “recovering serious person,” then InterPlay might be for you.

InterPlay is firmly based in affirmation and looking for the good. You don’t have to think of yourself as creative in order to do InterPlay. We can teach you that part easily. We get far too much criticism in our lives already. We need to spend more time in the warm bath of acceptance.

InterPlay is the perfect antidote to stress and cynicism.
