Today in Queens, members and representatives of Local #3 IBEW and the Educational & Cultural Trust Fund of the Electrical Industry (E&C) attended the announcement of New York becoming the first state in the nation to implement the federal Inflation Reduction Act's Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR) Program.
Funding from the U.S. Department of Energy will expand NYSERDA's EmPower+ program that helps low-income households to make energy efficiency and electrification upgrades.
Ultimately, the Home Energy Rebates program will improve the environment, lower costs to homeowners and contractors, and create more good-paying jobs for electricians and trades workers, especially as it expands to moderate-income households and larger residential buildings.

🚨 ACTION ALERT! 🚨
Thanks to recent legislation in New York State, prevailing wage requirements are applicable on certain construction projects performed under private contracts. The goal was to expand prevailing wage to private projects receiving public subsidies and grow the middle class in our state.
However, the Public Subsidy Board is holding a hearing THIS MONDAY, MAY 20TH that will impact the calculation of funds paid by a public entity, which is used to determine eligible projects required to pay the prevailing rate. We believe this would have negative impacts on projects qualifying for prevailing wage.
Local #3 IBEW and the NYS Building & Construction Trades Council are asking you to let the board know that PUBLICLY FUNDED PROJECTS HAVE TO PAY WORKERS PREVAILING RATES.
Visit the website www.nybuildingtrades.com/testimony to easily submit written testimony via email.
THE DEADLINE IS 11:59 P.M. ON SATURDAY, MAY 18TH.
Please take 3 minutes of your time to go to the website and submit your written testimony to the Public Subsidy Board.
Congratulations to Local #3 IBEW journeywoman/forewoman Allison Rolon on being named Tradeswoman of the Week by TradesFutures, which helps develop, promote, and improve Apprenticeship Readiness Programs (ARPs) such as Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW)!
From the White House to the local level, more and more lawmakers are finally getting it: strong prevailing wage laws mean good jobs and strong communities.

"Asked after the Workers' Memorial Day Mass why he hosts the Mass year after year, Fr. Brian Jordan, in his Brooklyn accent, replied that he was in New York City during the 9/11 terror attacks. 'The police department had a chaplain, the fire department had a chaplain. But the construction workers, who were more than anybody else there, didn’t have a chaplain,' he said. He became their chaplain and has been a 'labor priest' ever since."
