“This picture of Haoui Montaug reminds me of a Man Ray photograph. It looks like it’s from another time, there’s something very 1920s about it. It’s never been published before.
Haoui was a doorman at a lot of well-known New York City nightclubs, and ran a cabaret r***e called No Entiendes, which showcased a young Madonna and early performances by the Beastie Boys. He also appeared in the films Krush Groove and Edo Bertoglio’s Downtown 81.
I photographed him for The Face when I was their New York photographer.”

The 2021 - A music group named Sarko Montaug release debut single
Chicago-based indie pop duo Sarko Montaug – married partners Cristian and Jess Mora – who have stepped out on the music scene with their unique blend of innovative sounds that pay tribute to the past while celebrating today’s musical landscape. The duo conceived their name from DJ Anita Sarko and Doorman Haoui Montaug, who are known for providing places for artists like Beastie Boys and Madonna to perform when they were “unknowns.” According to Sarko Montaug: “We’ll always sound indie, even when we are trying to be pop and we’ll always be trying to modernize the past.”

When Maggie Smith, a social activist, opened Tin Pan Alley in 1978 she wanted to create a welcoming environment for locals in the economically depressed neighborhood of Times Square known as a center of the s*x trade. The arrival of downtown artists in 1980 diversified the crowd, and with the later addition of exhibitions and performances it echoed the creative dialogue that began at the Times Square Show in 1980. For a time the bar was largely run by women artists: Cara Perlman, Jane Sherry, Nan Goldin, and Ulli Rimkus were bartenders, and Kiki Smith was the cook. It was at Tin Pan Alley where Cara Perlman created her finger-paint portraits, including this example of Haoui Montaug.
Haoui Montaug was a key player in the shaping of NYC nightlife during the 1980s, being doorman at Hurrah, Palladium, Studio 54, and Danceteria. He held a cabaret called No Entiendes! at Danceteria and gave many aspiring artists their first opportunity at performing, including an unknown Danceteria waitress named Madonna. She was present via telephone at Haoui’s su***de party in 1991. Remember those?! When he could no longer take the pain and degradation of complications from AIDS, Haoui Montaug threw a farewell party and invited his closest friends. At the gathering Montaug swallowed five Seconal barbiturate pills, and went into a deep labored sleep, but kept breathing to the dismay of the guests. His guests remained the next morning when he awoke in a fury. He finally swallowed 20 more pills and died posthaste.

This photo of Haoui "Howie" Montaug - Danceteria Doorman & DJ Anita Sarko came up in my phone memories today , not sure who to photo credit John Andrew Simone is this yours ? . Like alot of memories this time of year I got teary eyed thinking of these 2 , how they gave me my start in NYC as a singing waiter at the first Karaoke Party for gringos in 1987 & how wonderfully talented creative and funny they were . Haoui's " No Entiendes" Cabaret helped a little girl singer named Madonna land a record deal and showcased some punk rappers who called themselves THE BEASTIE BOYS!!!!!!!!!!! . Anita was like Miss Tammy in Hairspray - 1988 DJing in the 1960s w 2 Caliofone Record Players at the All Girls School she attended in Detroit w Gilda Radner and graduated on to The Mudd Club, Studio 54, countless A List clubs & events as well as being a fab journalist for Details Magazine . Both Haoui & Anita lived life on their terms and left this ole world on their terms ( do a Wiki Search , too painful to discuss here today 😞 ) . Both of you are remembered today and always . All my Love Thank you xo Dj Tennessee

This polaroid was taken of the Danceteria 27 who were arrested on October 4th 1980 at the closing of the first Danceteria on 37th Street (plus some more employees who were not arrested). The polaroids were found in David Wojnarowicz's archives at NYU but we don't know who actually shot them. None of us old geezers can remember who the actual person was behind the camera. My guess is David or Zoe. If anyone knows for sure, don't be shy. Most of the people are identified but some remain mysterious. Some last names are missing too.
198x - Haoui shows up in a WNBC Live At Five news story.
