To the best of my knowledge, I was the first & only medical doctor to go down to Ground Zero as a volunteer the morning of 9/11. I didn’t see any other doctor there. That’s why I had to set up the 1st triage center, & gave the OK to the Mayor’s Office that it was safe to send in the ambulances, after I had a nice construction worker hotwire an abandoned Bobcat to bulldoze a pathway through the knee-deep debris. We all thought we might die that day. (I took all these photos & more are available on my website) I seem to be different than most people in that I can function calmly under intense pressure, & am also willing to risk my life for strangers. That’s also why I spent my own money to bring $100,000 worth of trauma supplies physically into Ukraine only 2 months after the war started, when it was extremely unsafe (a missile hit the train station in Lviv & killed 2 people only hours after I arrived). My parents were both very altruistic & with my help founded the Chynn Family Foundation, through which we’ve donated $1 million for medical research, education & to promote “filial piety” (a pet cause of my dad’s, who felt many children weren’t sufficiently devoted to their parents). Not everyone has the opportunity or constitution to risk one’s life, or to donate a million dollars. But we all must do what we can to help others & the world around us, by volunteering, fundraising, voting, or even praying.
