Maddie Irmen Connolly, PT, DPT, brings a personal understanding of the demands and joys of movement from her time as a professional dancer to her work as a Physical Therapist. She enjoys working collaboratively with patients and is passionate about using movement and a hands-on approach to foster meaningful changes for her patients. Maddie is motivated to help her patients heal and learn about their bodies so they can return to doing the things that matter most to them.
Maddie’s practice is strongly rooted in the techniques and interconnected whole-body approach of the Institute of Physical Art. She continues to further her practice with continuing education courses and pursuing certification as a Certified Functional Manual Therapist (CFMT). She received her doctorate of physical therapy from Hunter College, where she was honored as the Ayers-Selman Founders Award recipient for scholarship and professional activities. She has completed clinical affiliations specializing in pediatrics and dance medicine.
Maddie’s passion for physical therapy grew out of her experiences sharing movement as a professional modern dancer and dance teacher. She holds a BFA in Dance from The Ohio State University, and danced professionally in New York City, performing theatrical and physically demanding pieces. She also had the pleasure of teaching dance to students of all ages, striving to nourish healthy body-awareness and foster creativity in her students.

spotlighting — one of our amazing kane school teacher trainers! we asked judy some questions about her journey—read on to discover her answers 💫
Q: What inspired or led you to be a teacher trainer?
JT: When I was a student I had an amazing experience and great teachers. I wanted to give back and share what I’ve learned and hope that new students have a great experience too.
Q: What have you learned as a teacher trainer about teaching, and/or about Pilates that you may not have learned as a student or instructor?
JT: Being a teacher trainer forces you to explain movement differently than you would a client. You have to take a deeper dive teaching movement than you would teaching a client.
Q: How has being a teacher trainer - especially in a teaching studio like Kinected - changed you as a teacher, and as a student?
JT: Being a teacher doesn’t mean you know it all, what inspires me is what I can learn from students. I love hearing their experiences and what knowledge they have to share. There is so much to learn you are forever a student.
Q: Any advice to students you’d like to pass along?
JT: Take your time, enjoy the learning process and don’t put too much pressure on yourself.

did you know supination + pronation play an essential role in our gait? when you take a step and first put weight on your front foot in forward motion, you usually first pass through a heel strike. as your foot further articulates onto the ground, pronation occurs to help flatten the foot, which unlocks your midfoot to spread and transition the weight more evenly and smoothly. as your body continues to move over that front foot, the foot supinates to help the heel rise so you can push off and transfer weight to the ball of the foot + beyond. get into it more with this month!

part 2 in our 3-part “arthritic athlete” series is 8/2, this time focusing on the shoulder with !
degenerative arthritis is the leading cause of joint replacements. osteoarthritis creates many compensatory patterns that can lead to asymmetries in movement + posture. these patterns can lead to many pathologies: back pain, poor shoulder biomechanics, neck pain + even increased lateral curvature of the spine. many who have OA are athletic and highly functional and want to wait for a joint replacement surgery until the timing is right for them. dive into programming for the arthritic shoulder in this workshop— exercises designed to address misalignment and functionality will be covered on the mat, reformer + chair. these exercises will support your client in their desire to “stay vertical,” active + balanced.
fri, 8/2: 1-5pm EST // $180 // 4 KS CECs // in-person + virtual
foot + ankle is our focus for july! the talus, one of the 28 bones in each of our feet + located in the rearfoot, is crucial to the anatomy of both the foot + ankle as it is part of the subtalar and transverse tarsal joints (foot) and, along with the tibia and fibula, makes up the talocrural joint (ankle). these joints give us tons of movement options in our feet and ankles — notably, the subtalar (calcaneus + talus) joint mobility gives the foot freedom to move independent of the leg, so when we walk on uneven terrain, our foot can adjust without major adjustment up the chain. dive deeper in our student lecture series + mods of the month, coming up with judy thurau!

our S.I. joint — sacroiliac joint — is a major player in transitioning the load from our trunk to our pelvis and lower body, and can easily become irritated. one of our go-to assessments looks at the mechanics of the hip: how is the femur dropping + gliding well in the socket, in all directions? we also look at the pelvis, specifically the iliums: are they rotated? hiked? overly flexed or tilted? these questions help us understand how to help improve the function the lumbopelvic region + take any undue stress off the S.I. joints. explore with us this month in our mods and PT to pilates, as well as our SLS + masterclass w/ !
