Nagai is a versatile musical artist focused on being a pianist, accordionist, improviser, and composer, who composes original scores for films and live performances. Composer Declan Sheehy-Moss will be performing his newest project "Bounce", which features a new, deeper sound which combines elements of modern jazz, free jazz, and funk, guitar pedals and other electronics used alongside acoustic instruments. American Dance Festival presents a new commission by ShaLeigh Dance Works called “enVISION: The Next Chapter”, an immersive interdisciplinary performance that “relies not on sight or sound but on the felt sense of sonic experiences and visual perceptions”. The work will be presented to a live audience who can choose to experience the show blindfolded or with earbuds, and six audience members will be invited to join the experience onstage! Hosted by Composers Now founder and artistic director Tania León, DIALOGUES celebrates composers Victoria Cheah, Susie Ibarra, and Kamala Sankaram. The event will take place at Van Cortlandt House Museum Lawn on Saturday, July 13th, 2:00 PM, and will be followed by thought-provoking town hall-style conversations, a forum for meaningful exchanges of ideas, between composers, performers, and audiences. Next week on Tuesday, July 9th, Jeryl Johnston will be featured on our IMPACT series! Johnston is a NYC based composer, performer, and teacher. Her experience beginning with the salsa bands of Oregon and Washington, through several years playing with ‘Orquesta Son Mayor,’ among others, in Los Angeles, brought her to New York. She is the musical director of the Afro-Cuban third-stream ensemble “Yanine” and has an article forthcoming called “Variation Techniques in Four West African Lead Drum Examples,” available in “Analytical Approaches to World Music” this month! The Astoria Choir will premiere composer Karen Siegel’s choral sound installation ‘Lessons of Stone’ throughout multiple galleries of the Noguchi Museum. ‘Lessons of Stone’ is inspired by the work and life of Isamu Noguchi. Consisting of four movements performed with repetition, the work is intended as a “self-guided sonic experience that can be heard in any order”. The performance is free as part of Free First Friday.
