As we celebrate Pride Week 2024 here in New York City, our lived experiences and the intersectionalities of our identities matter, especially for our mental health. Q***r and transgender Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (QTBIPOC) face unique challenges at the intersections of racism, homophobia, and transphobia.
At IHI, we understand that healing involves honoring our intersecting identities and fighting against the harmful impacts of oppression. We stand together in support of all our beautiful, diverse communities and against racism, white supremacy, misogyny, and hate in all forms.
If you're having a difficult time, know that it is not your fault. Our social environment is rife with ; a particularly harmful form of stress that is often experienced by stigmatized and marginalized people, especially LGBTQIA+ folx. For more info on the harmful impacts of minority stress, check out the link above.
At IHI Therapy Center, we provide expert care for every identity (SM) and offer support for people of all gender identities and sexual orientations.
Stay with us this week as we explore these important issues and celebrate our resilience.

As we begin Pride Week 2024 here in New York City, it is critical that we acknowledge the mental health challenges and social barriers faced by LGBTQIA+ communities. Many of us, particularly our transgender and gender diverse loved ones, friends, and peers are experiencing heightened discrimination, violence, and stigmatization leading to increased mental health struggles.

On June 19th, we celebrate Juneteenth, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Originating in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, Juneteenth marks the day when freedom was announced for the last enslaved people in Texas, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for freedom and justice of Black Americans and calls us to continue the fight against racial inequality.
The fight for racial justice and LGBTQ+ rights are deeply intertwined, part of a broader movement towards equality and justice for all. Despite progress, significant challenges persist for Black LGBTQ+ Americans, most especially for q***r and transgender Black and Indigenous People of Color (QTBIPOC).
Amid this Juneteenth celebration, it's essential to recognize intersectionalities within the African American community, particularly the lived experiences of Black LGBTQ+ and QTBIPOC individuals.
Pierce Lafayette and Felix Hall were a gay couple from Georgia in the mid-1800s. Lafayette, formerly enslaved by Alexander Hamilton Stephens, the vice president of the Confederate States, came to own a two-story home that had once belonged to Stephens. Despite societal norms, Lafayette and Hall maintained an openly romantic relationship, with Lafayette reportedly having a higher social status than Hall, as Hall was referred to as Pierce’s “mistress.” Their relationship is cited as the earliest documented same-sex romance between two formerly enslaved men in the United States.
As we commemorate Juneteenth, let us also honor pioneers like Pierce Lafayette and Felix Hall, whose legacy inspires us to build a more inclusive and equitable world. Educate yourself and others, support Black LGBTQ+ organizations and indviduals, advocate for change, and amplify Black LGBTQ+ and QTBIPOC voices. Together, we can create a future where everyone lives freely and proudly.
