"These last few months have been a roller coaster! Figuring out how to pivot, explore other revenue streams, help those around you, and grow community, in a seemingly isolated environment, has been a challenge. However, we've been able to hold on to our core mission to help guide us through this time. The word 'lakou' ultimately symbolizes community in Haitian Creole. As a cafe, it is what we are about at our core --- from curated events to just creating space for folks who need it most. Even through COVID-19, we have been able to continue that spirit of community. We've been able to provide over 1000 free meals to individuals in Brooklyn, as well as refreshments to protesters who are speaking out against injustices. I'm excited that folks are now working to balance the scales of justice and this has even extended to commerce. If this continues, I'm certain that we will definitely come out of COVID-19 stronger than ever." - Cassandre Davilmar, Owner We put together a growing collection of Black-owned businesses in Brooklyn so you can . ・・・
This past April, we partnered with and were able to donated over 400 meals to some communities in Brooklyn with the help of your purchases! After speaking with Cassandre Davilmar (()a proverb comes to mind. “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”. Davilmar, owner of , has joined forces with fellow restaurant, , in Brooklyn to provide meals to those most deeply impacted by the global pandemic. If it wasn't enough to be enamored by Cassandre’s willingness to serve, her reasoning for why community is part of her self care - “Because doing it alone won’t make us stronger, it’ll only make us tired and stressed out” - was enough for us to want to learn more about the owner.⠀
⠀ “We are raised to KNOW we are valuable, so when we hear otherwise it makes a lot of us fight even harder to prove those individuals wrong.” And Davilmar proved them wrong, indeed - going on to graduate law school before working at a top-ten law firm and eventually taking a stab at entrepreneurship. The business woman is pretty accustomed to staying on her pivot foot. It’s been a helpful quality so far. “We all have dreams. We achieve them, but we shouldn’t feel bound by them. I’m proud that I have the courage to follow my dreams even if they change.” Cassandre admits from a young age wanting to bring people together. One day she stepped away from law in search of something more connecting. Click the link in bio to read more! 👑 📸

Cassandre,
Thank you so much for your generous donation that you made to support our Haitian immigrant clients, in collaboration with folks at Crown Heights Mutual Aid.
The 34 meals that you provided went to our most vulnerable population, many of whom don't have a stable immigration status. Many of our clients are experiencing levels of fear now, as a result of the Covid-19 Epidemic. They are afraid to go out because they don't want to get sick, but they also have a great fear of being detained by ICE, the immigration police. After hearing the news of Haitians being detained and deported a couple of weeks ago, some of our clients have been overwhelmed with fear, and this has impacted their ability to secure food. Some are even afraid to go out to the grab-and-go food hubs that the city has set up at certain local schools.
Among our clients that received the meals last Friday, were a group of 6 youth who live in a transitional independent living youth shelter in Bed Stuy. They are a group of studious young men who are English Language Learners, and spend all day adapting to remote studies that have become their new reality. Unfortunately most of their phones are cut off now so it is a challenge to communicate with them regularly. They along with all of our clients that received the meals last Friday night expressed that they truly appreciated having a hot Haitian meal.
Although our physical office in Flatbush is closed, our staff continues to work remotely to assist our clients during this crisis with emergency supplies and assuring continuation of legal immigration services. We are grateful for the existing Mutual Aid efforts that have reached out to us to assist our clients with random food items and meals, but we are working hard to see if we can secure more regular meals for folks that are afraid to go out. We would appreciate any future opportunities in collaboration to help our clients with the food insecurity issues that they currently face.
Thanks again for your generous support!
