PowerPlay advances the lives of girls in NYC, helping them grow physically, emotionally and academically stronger. http://www.powerplaynyc.org/
PowerPlay came into being when the organization’s founder convened a group of women who felt strongly that the health benefits and life lessons for success to be learned from sports needed to be shared with girls in NYC; especially girls from underserved communities who need it most. Despite the advances in girls’ sport participation since the passage of Title IX, girls are still faced with an un
🌟 Happy Labor Day from PowerPlay NYC! 🌟
Today, we celebrate the resilience, dedication, and contributions of workers across every industry. Whether you're breaking barriers in boardrooms, championing equity in sports, or shaping future leaders in our communities—your work matters and your impact is undeniable. 💪🏽💼
Let’s take a moment to honor the legacy of those who fought for workers' rights, and to recognize the ongoing efforts for fair treatment, equity, and justice in the workplace. We still have work to do, but today, we pause to reflect and appreciate how far we've come.
Thank you to everyone pushing for a brighter, more inclusive future. ✨
We're back with another summer recap!
🚀 A day of learning, inspiration, and discovery for our Superstars Leadership Academy participants! Hosted by our former President & CEO - Vivian Santora and her incredible team at Alvarez and Marsal.
The day kicked off with a panel featuring ten A&M team members from various departments, followed by engaging breakout sessions where the girls discussed their career and college journeys, explored the vast and complex consulting industry, and received an inside look at A&M’s offices.
A special thanks to Vivian and her team for making this experience possible. Exposing our girls to a new career path and introducing them to incredible women at different stages of their careers was truly impactful! 💼🌟
Welcome to our 1st summer recap!
🌟 Four of our SSLAers had the incredible opportunity to join the Junior One Hundred Challenge hosted by the youth of One hundred Black Men New York (OBMNY)! 🏌️♀️✨
Our girls spent the day receiving top-notch golf instruction from PGA professionals, breaking down barriers, and gaining exposure to the world of golf. It was inspiring to see them network with other youth, exchange ideas, and brainstorm innovative ways for the PGA to connect with more young people like them.
Huge thanks to Michael Atherley for the invitation to this amazing event and for supporting our girls as they continue to break new ground! 🙌🏾
Our girls knocked it out of the park this summer, learning baseball skills and putting them to the test during our amazing tournament last week. With our Nike Ambassadors cheering them on, the girls played their hearts out, winning medals and taking home goodies🏅🌟 Special thank you to the Snug Harbor League for donating their field, volunteering and keeping us cool with ice cream! Special shout out to our Summer MVPs from PS19 and PS59 for shining bright on the field! None of this would have been possible without the support of the DYCD Neighborhood Youth Sports grant.
Grateful for the incredible opportunity our STARS Series participants had to connect with NY Mets superstar Francisco Lindor as part of Lindor Smile Tuesdays! Francisco shared his secrets to achieving a 5-star smile and emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy dental routine. Through this experience, our youth not only learned from local dentists but also left with new habits for healthier smiles and brighter futures. A special thanks to Francisco Lindor for inspiring our participants to lead healthy lifestyles and the Mets for their ongoing support! 🌟
Our SSLAers participated in action packed, Olympic themed, mini games with our friends at OpenX and Spark courtesy of our partnership with Givsly. Our young people battled it out with the volunteers in the ultimate series of mini-games that tested their teamwork and problem-solving abilities. The energy was electric as everyone gave their best effort to navigate the challenges and emerge victorious, all while building memorable connections. A big shoutout to everyone involved!
🏈✨ Our SSLAers had an incredible experience touring the NFL Headquarters! From exploring the iconic offices to engaging in meaningful conversations with inspiring female role models, it was an unforgettable day.
The girls had the opportunity to dive deep into what it takes to excel in the sports industry, learning about career paths, gaining practical tips, and discussing the power of resilience in a male-dominated field.
We’re grateful to the amazing women at the NFL who shared their journeys and wisdom with our future leaders. Special shoutout to our Board member Anna Isaacson for support in executing this initiative.

On Wednesday, June 12, 2024, students from PS19 and PS68 showcased their fencing talents in an exhilarating event! 🗡️ This showcase was initiated by the young people themselves, inspired by our annual rugby tournament. We are beyond proud of our Staten Island programs, which continue to promote and develop the girls in the sport of fencing. This showcase was a fantastic occasion for the girls to celebrate their achievements and demonstrate their skills. 🎉👏
Thank you to everyone who made this event possible and to all the amazing students who participated. Your dedication and hard work are truly inspiring! 🌟🤺

🌟 A Huge Thank You to Gatorade for sponsoring our 3rd Annual Girls Rugby Tournament! 🌟
We're thrilled to announce that our 3rd Annual Rugby Tournament for girls was a resounding success, and it's all thanks to the incredible support from Gatorade through their Equity in Sports Community Grant! 🏉✨
150 girls from across NYC came together to build confidence, community, and empowerment through the sport of rugby.
Why Rugby? Rugby is a unique addition to our sports programming, particularly for girls of color in low-income public schools. It's a sport that breaks barriers and challenges stereotypes, proving that girls can excel in what is traditionally seen as a boys' sport.
One participant beautifully summed it up: “It’s exciting to know that I can do things like this and you don’t have to feel like boys aren’t including you because it’s an all-girls program.”
Thank you, Gatorade, for sponsoring and furthering our mission with:
- A generous $10,000 grant
- Gatorade equipment
- Pallets of Gatorade for our athletes
Together, we're building confidence, building community, and empowering our girls! 💪🏽💙
🎉⚾️ We had a fantastic time participating in latest initiative - ‘PLAY BALL WEEKEND’! This amazing program encourages baseball activities for all age groups, especially youth, by highlighting the many ways the game can be played outside of traditional leagues. From playing catch and stickball to Wiffle ball and skills competitions like “Pitch, Hit & Run,” there are endless ways to enjoy baseball!
On June 13, 2024, our partner school had the incredible opportunity to learn baseball from softball superstars and .canady.
Thank you so much for including us in this exciting initiative. Let’s keep playing ball! ⚾️🙌

PowerPlay NYC
PowerPlay NYC came into being when the organization’s founder convened a group of women who felt strongly that the health benefits and life lessons for success to be learned from sports needed to be shared with girls in NYC; especially girls from underserved communities who need it most. Despite the advances in girls’ sport participation since the passage of Title IX, girls are still faced with an uneven playing field, especially in NYC where girls participate in sports at half the rate that boys do. PowerPlay began offering its first STARS (Sports Training and Role models for Success) programming in 2001. Today, PowerPlay is a leading provider of girls’ sports and life skills programming.
PowerPlay NYC is distinguished by being the only girl-focused organization in NYC which:
• offers girls the opportunity to learn a variety of sports,
• is open to all girls regardless of ability level, and
• has a health, wellness and life skills curriculum which accompanies all sports learning.
Our programs reflect the fundamental principles of PowerPlay NYC:
• Girls who participate in sports are more likely to feel better about their bodies and have higher levels of self-esteem than girls who do not play sports.
• Many of the fundamental life skills for success can be learned through sports participation and related life skills learning activities.
• It is critically important to continually provide opportunities for girls to engage in sports and fitness activity throughout their developmental years.
