Friends of NYAC Rugby, please see the message from our friend Bruce McLane below regarding the health of our friend Mike Tolkin.

Shoot me a text or a message if you or anyone you know can help out.
Peace,
Bruce

Dear Friends,

Mike Tolkin, who most of you know, has been dealing with some health challenges having to do liver disease. The best way to improve his situation is to have a liver transplant. His transplant team has shared important information with me, and now I am providing that information with you to see if there is anyone who might be willing to consider doing this.

As some of you know, Mike has been dealing with this issue for a while now. Over time, he has been working with the team at New York Presbyterian, one of the best facilities in the world for this, to get evaluated for a liver transplant, which will restore him to a healthier life. The problem is that the priority for livers is highest for the sickest patients. He is not sick enough now to get a liver and getting sicker means that he may eventually get too sick to get a transplant. This can happen quicklly, and a liver might not be available right when he needs one. The possibility looms that Mike might be too sick for transplant if and when it is his turn. Even if he was able to get a liver, being very sick means that it is going to take longer to recover.

The optimal situation is for Mike to get a liver transplant from a living donor.
Receiving a transplant from a living donor eases the recovery, makes planning easier, and allows the evaluation of the donor to be thorough.
While donating a part of your liver sounds daunting (only a part is needed as the liver regenerates quickly), it has become a fairly normal and safe procedure with all the information you need to know readily available. Any expenses are also fully covered.

If you would be willing to think about donating, you can go to this website, learn about donation, and fill out a questionnaire to determine if you could be a liver donor.

This link is confidential, so I won’t know if you go online or not, or if you decide not to be a donor; however, I could help you with any questions you may have.
Thank you for reading this note and considering my request. If you want more information before you make a decision, please go to the link below, where you can get more information. You may also call the Living Donor Specialist at 212-305-9381.
