Happy Navy Day! 🇺🇸💙

Today, we celebrate the brave men and women of the Navy who protect our shores and keep us safe. 20 years after our founding here in NYC, we helped establish October 27 as in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt's birthday. While the official Navy recognition day was later changed to the Navy's October 13 birthday, everywhere can be proud of our long history of support for the Navy and other sea services.

You can join us in honoring Sailors past and present by joining us in our "Making Big Waves with Small Gifts" campaign. 🌊🎁 Together, we can make a difference and support our heroes at sea. 🙌💙

And mark your calendars for our upcoming 121st Anniversary Dinner! 🎉🥳 Join us for a night of celebration and helping us continue our mission into 2024 and beyond. It's a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow supporters and show your appreciation for our sea services.

We are just three days away from this year's New York Maritime Security Conference!

For our second annual conference, we are especially honored to include in our program a World War II Merchant Marine Congressional Gold Medal Replica Presentation. Recognizing that several World War II Merchant Marine Veterans did not have the opportunity to be publicly honored for their Congressional Gold Medals due to COVID-19, we want to ensure that such veterans receive the honor and recognition that their service and dedication to our country deserves.

We have the honor to recognize two recipients:

CAPT Hugh M. Stephens, CSP (Ret.), PE, BPS
Stephens entered the maritime industry in 1943 as a 19-year-old seaman on board Liberty Ships, including the S/S John Brown during World War II. By the war’s end, Stephens had earned his third mate’s license, sailing as third mate aboard an army transport hospital ship. Stephens holds a USCG Unlimited Tonnage Ocean Master’s License with many endorsements including Ordinary Seaman, Able Bodied Seaman, and First Class Pilot, Any Tonnage, for the Upper Bay of N.Y. Harbor, 16 issues, now in Continuity.

James L. Dipelesi
After the attack on Pearl Harbor Jim faked his age and as a 16-year-old joined the US Merchant Marine. He toured for about a year across the Atlantic through the Suez Canal to India. Once back in the US he joined the US Navy. He shipped out to Okinawa and on the way hit a Typhoon which sent the Light Cruiser Duluth to repair. The ship was repaired and sent back into action in the final battles of Okinawa. During Jim’s war time in the Navy, the Duluth was attacked by Kamikaze and Japanese bombers surviving both. The Duluth was part of the fleet in Tokyo Bay when the surrender papers were signed.
