I sat down with PIX11 to discuss my support for the U.S. Surgeon General declaring gun violence a national public health crisis. Yesterday in the Bronx, a 12-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound. The U.S. Surgeon General’s advisory will focus attention and resources to keep families in our community safe.

Happy Juneteenth!

Juneteenth, which is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, marks a significant moment in American history, when the last enslaved African Americans were given their freedom. On June 19, 1865, two years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, a Union Army Major General arrived in Galveston, Texas, where slaves were unaware of Lincoln’s order, to inform them of their freedom. Juneteenth commemorates the end of a deplorable chapter, and the hope, courage and legacy of Black Americans in the story of our nation.

Today, all 62 District Attorneys in the state of New York, and the New York State Attorney General, individually signed a joint statement reassuring their constituents of their public safety priorities while pledging to prosecute and investigate hate-motivated threats or violence in response to the recent string of antisemitic incidents in New York City.

“As law enforcement and elected leaders in New York, we have a responsibility to assure the communities that we serve that their safety is paramount. Recently, there has been an escalation of targeted threats and attacks on Jewish communities and individuals, including threats to Jewish riders on the New York City subway system, vandalism targeting the homes of Jewish board members of the Brooklyn Museum, and antisemitic signs and chants during a gathering outside a memorial in New York City to victims killed at the Nova music festival, which caused the exhibit to be locked down.

“These acts have left large segments of our communities–both Jews and non-Jews–scared for their safety and that of their families and neighbors. No New Yorker should fear for their safety for any reason, and especially because of who they are.

“We support the rights of all New Yorkers to lawfully and peacefully gather and protest, but we want to reassure all communities, including Jewish ones, that we will understand the fear and pledge to investigate and prosecute all hate crimes and acts of violence or threats of violence based on the facts and to the fullest extent possible under the law.”

Eid Al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, symbolizes faith, obedience, and sacrifice, for many it also marks the end of the pilgrimage to Mecca, the Hajj. May the spirit of the occasion inspire unity and generosity, and may your sacrifices be appreciated while you enjoy this time of festivity and reflection.

Eid Mubarak to all!

“Today, on the morning his trial was set to begin in Manhattan Federal Court, Felix Herrera Garcia pleaded guilty to Conspiracy to Distribute Narcotics Resulting in Death and other federal charges for causing the fatal fentanyl ingestion of 22-month-old Nicholas Dominici and the injury to three other babies at the Divino Nino Day Care Center in the Bronx on September 15, 2023. Herrera Garcia has now been held accountable in the tragic loss of little Nicholas, the serious injury of Abel, and the harm to Kiara and Jaziel. This incident was as horrific as it was avoidable.”

Finn, a dog who was abused by his owner has been placed into a loving home! Thanks to the hard work of our team at the Bronx District Attorney’s Office and the ASPCA Finn, (formally known as Kash) was rescued from an owner who was caught on video hitting the 18-month-old with a leash, as well as picking him up by his collar and tossing him down a hallway. His former owner was forced to surrender the pit bull and is banned from having any animals for at least five years.

Finn came to the ASPCA in 2023 with a history of blunt force trauma. Radiographs showed he had a healed rib fracture. Despite the circumstances, Finn demonstrated incredible resilience. ASPCA behavior specialists prepared Finn for adoption into a new home, helping him develop strong social skills, teaching him how to properly walk on a leash and appropriately interact with other dogs.
