Even though it’s not technically the beginning of fall, at Sadie Nash, it sure feels like it! 🍂
With the end of Summer Institute, our restorative break, the beginning of the school year, and our planning for our fall programs, we’ve entered into the next season. 🌤️
So, in true Sadie Nash fashion, today our go-around question for the is– What marks the beginning of fall to you?
Is it the start of school? 🏫 After Labor day? ☀️ Sweater weather? 🧥🧣
We want to know! Comment below or share your answer via our instagram stories. 💬
Beginning today, August 26th to September 2nd the Sadie Nash offices will be closed. ✨
During this time, SNLP Staff will take time away from work to rest and restore before our fall programming. This intentional pause will allow our staff to reflect, recharge, and find renewed inspiration for our upcoming programs. 🌱
We emphasize the importance of mental health and rest with Nashers, and so we uphold this value for ourselves as well. We hope you too, find some time to center your wellness and take a break. 💜
✨WE’RE BACK WITH THE SADIE NASH ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT ✨
Meet Akiera Charles (she/her), a Sadie Nash Dean Alumna and founder of the Bed Stuy Clothes Swap.
Akiera is an environmental justice practitioner and multi-hyphenated creative. She is a local Bed Stuy resident hailing from Grenada. In the summer of 2018, Akiera was a Summer Institute Dean. As a dean, she had the opportunity to merge her love for Afro-Futurism, Social Impact Entrepreneurship, and Social Activism into curriculum development.
After Akiera found herself faced with financial hardships upon starting grad school and wanting to “look fly on” those NYC streets, Akiera started Bed Stuy Clothes Swap right in front of her house. A culmination of being priced out of “normal thriftwear prices” and not seeing enough Black women lead in sustainable fashion leadership spaces inspired Akiera to deepen her knowledge about all the ways fashion impacts frontline communities and unevenly harms people of color.
Akiera’s message for Nashers is: “Always stay curious, lean into brave spaces, try many hobbies, grow where you are happy and seen, and be the one you’ve been waiting for.”
Nashers! Attend Bed Stuy Clothes Swap Teen’s Back to School Embroidery Class. More information on their Instagram page.
Sadie Nash Alumni are doing amazing things around the world! Do you know someone we should spotlight? Nominate them.
If so, fill out the nomination form in our bio so we can uplift them and their work and send some SNLP swag their way.

August is Black Philanthropy Month–a time to recognize and uplift the legacy of giving in Black communities. Black Philanthropy Month celebrates the often underrecognized power and influence of Black donors. This year’s theme is “Afro-Futures of Giving” and we are envisioning what the future of giving can look like as we reflect on how financial resources can be directed towards community care.
Our Director of Development and Communications, Samra Ghermay says, “So much philanthropic wealth has been built on the backs of poor people, enslaved people, and Black people. We must acknowledge and celebrate the abundant, varied and long history of Black communities and their legacy of giving rather than denying Black people’s participation in philanthropy."
At Sadie Nash, we are so grateful for the support from our that enables us to build up our communities together. 💜
Every year, Sadie Nash welcomes two Nashers on the Board as Youth Board Members. We want to introduce you to our new Youth Board members, who just began their terms in July! First, let us introduce Oluwabukunmi! ⭐

Meet our second Youth Board Member next week…

Next week… Manhattan!
As we close out National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to take one more chance to uplift the work of healers as they ground us in our own wellness curriculum. 🌱 This week, we are thinking about the work of Tricia Hersey (she/her) and the importance of rest.
“You were not just born to center your entire existence on work and labor. You were born to heal, to grow, to be of service to yourself and community, to practice, to experiment, to create, to have space, to dream, and to connect.” - Tricia Hersey
We want to challenge the stigma that healing can only occur within a vacuum, and by creating community and emphasizing love in all aspects of our programming, we show Nashers that they can access a pathway to healing that feels right for themselves. ☀️ We understand that young people with marginalized identities need more mental health support and resources, so they can continue to dream bigger and louder. 🌍🔊
At Sadie Nash, we are dedicated to having wellness resources for all Nashers to engage in their healing journey with support. 💜
