On Friday, September 13 for FREE in Bryant Park hear Arturo O'Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra meet up with legendary Downtown composer, arranger and slide trumpet master, Steven Bernstein for this very NYC celebration.

August 21, 1964, at an event sponsored by The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the Mississippi Project Parents Committee, Fannie Lou Hamer, sharecropper and vice-chairman of the Mississippi Freedom Party, filled The Town Hall with her story of the brutal beatings she endured by the police trying to register black voters. The very next day, Fannie Lou Hamer gave the same testimony before the Credentials Committee at the Democratic National Convention. Her speech is considered one of the landmark moments of the civil rights movement. Her words at The Town Hall: “I only have one question. Is this America, where we can go along and be beat up without any Federal intervention in the State of Mississippi?”

On this day, May 16, 1945 The New Jazz Foundation presented “A Modern Music Concert” introducing Dizzy Gillespie and his orchestra. The evening presented such jazz greats as Charlie Parker, Teddy Wilson and a newly solo vocalist from Lionel Hampton’s band: the great Dinah Washington. The second iteration of the event was recorded live a few weeks later on June 22nd, but only released in 2005.
