It was an honor to speak with and and a great deal of fun too! We had such a marvelous audience! Thank you to co-chairs and of , and the wonderful team as well as and for sponsoring! It’s been a summertime dream to be here. I am full of oysters, friendship, ocean, and sunshine. Thank you to everyone who has spent time with us here!
Tomorrow at I have the honor of speaking with hospitality stars and moderator EIC of on the topic of craftsmanship and creating a sense of place. My thoughts somehow turned to the much revered Villa Necchi. Built in the rationalist style by architect Piero Portaluppi, it was also the set of the movie I am Love by Luca Guadagnino. Guadagnino said he was looking for a set that could be part palace and part prison to tell the story of a family whose passions were trapped within their bourgeoise livestyle. When I saw the movie I was completely captivated by how wonderfully the villa was used to tell the story of beauty and existential crisis. Not unlike a movie director, interior designers create a narrative using craft and details to envelop our guests in an experience of place. Except that for hospitality projects we aren’t telling just one person’s story. We set the stage for many to experience their own. I am so looking forward to having this discussion tomorrow. See you there.
Working on some bathrooms after hours and as we were searching for inspiration I was reminded of this fave powder room with fabulous all over marbleized cork wallpaper. This powder had an earlier iteration where it once was a full bath. We took the bath space for a laundry room. I’m still fond of the first iteration with green tile and wallpaper but love that homes and spaces can have many lives. 💚🖤🤍

As a birthday present to myself, I took a 3 day flower workshop in Hudson, NY with two of my flower heros. Day one I learned how to make sugar flowers with Natasja Sadi of the international sensation . Day two and three were spent with the iconic floral designer learning how to make large and small centerpieces as well as wedding bouquets and event flowers. My friend and I picked each other up and went together to what we called Flower School. We learned so much about flowers! Natasja taught us how to make sugar look like nature. Painting the flowers was so much fun. Ariella taught us some tricks of the trade and brought so many beautiful flowers from amazing growers to arrange. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many beautiful flowers in one room! The final evening we dressed up and had dinner in a room we all decorated together. It was a hot pink extravaganza. I very much enjoyed meeting all of my fellow classmates below! Spending 3 days with equally flower obsessed people was incredibly gratifying. More in stories!

In 2014 I did my first where I had to renovate 2 powder rooms and a lounge area. I had approximately 3 weeks to get custom tile fabricated and installed. Who would be open to doing that? Enter . That was the beginning of a, thus far, 10 year relationship that is very dear to me. The first collection we did together, the Essence Collection, was of colorful glass and stone mosaics. Now we launch the Kaleidoscope Collection, new black and white stone mosaics which are a precursor to a colorful lava stone and stone collection coming next year. I am so grateful to all my friends at AKDO. Big hugs to owner Hakki Akbulak who has been such an amazing friend to me. Thank you to everyone who came to the launch party. Thank you to all our press friends who continue to feature the collection. Next week we have a party and conversation at which I hope everyone will attend!
Crafted in collaboration with , each piece in this collection embodies a harmonious balance between simplicity and complexity, echoing the beauty found in the natural patterns of marble.

It is with great gratitude that I share that our firm has been named to the A List 2024. Thank you to for this incredible honor. Being recognized as an A List designer is life changing. To be included among so many famous and talented peers not only recognizes our firm’s work, it shines a light on us and makes us visible. In many of the talks and events I have participated in this last month, design professionals and students have talked to me about how meaningful it is to see AAPI designers represented in press. We’ve had a number of emotional talks about it haven’t we? To our growing and to all the students who dream, I share this honor with you.
Many thanks to who took a chance on me first with pictured here. thank you.

In honor of AAPI heritage month and NYCxDesign, please join and of for a discussion about design and Asian American heritage. My parents were Korean immigrants and have raised us to be proud Americans, but they taught us to be proud of our Korean roots as well. Not a lot of my design work speaks to my Korean heritage. But my Korean heritage makes me a great designer, and I am looking forward to talking about why.
I am so proud of the community that we are building with . We are stronger and more creative together. Let us share our stories with you. Join us- we’re a lot of fun.

Let’s kick off AAPI history month with cover girl and my dear friend . I am so beyond proud of her, her beautiful story, and her ridiculously gorgeous designs. Representation is so important and so meaningful. As I embarked on my design career I had few Asian designer role models or mentors who were visible to me and who could understand my unique challenges and perspective as an Asian American. We started to change this for AAPI design professionals whether they are students or senior. Everyone wants to be seen, heard, and supported. Jean, your community is so proud of you and also grateful. Thanks for showcasing AAPI fabulousness!

I finally had my Corfu handles installed on pink double doors in our house. Inspired by Korean palace doors, I couldn’t wait to install these, but construction delays required patience! It’s been over a year and a half. Some rooms are finishing while other areas are just getting started. Crossing fingers we’ll finally be done this year.
Tonight is one of the biggest design events of the year, the President’s dinner. I am asked quite often whether show houses are important to designers’ careers and the answer is a resounding yes! When I was first invited to participate in 2014, I did a tiny freight hallway with two powder rooms and made it into a little jewel box of a lounge with upholstered hand blocked hollyhock walls from and gold leaf ceilings from . It transformed my career primarily because I met so many people through . Lifelong friends, members of the press, and just so many people in the business whom I turn to support in my projects now.
But most importantly, funds are raised for programming at the for children in under served communities. Studies have shown that children who are able to take after school programs, especially in the arts, do much better in school. And I would argue that enriching one’s life through the arts is achievement in itself. The most moving moments have been when children from the club have visited my room and said- wow maybe I want to be an interior designer! You could see their eyes pop with wonder at the rooms that were created. We had an architect with our firm who had come through Kips Bay programming herself and later attended SCAD.
I am so honored to be on the dinner committee for the Presidents Dinner. This year we honor the beyond amazing and beautiful inside and out for the lifetime achievement award. We also honor my dear friends at for their support of and their tireless support of the design community. None of this would be possible without the tremendous powerhouse , chairman Jim Druckman of and honorary chairwoman . Looking forward to seeing you tonight with dinner chairs and Vice chairs

It was such a warm, beautiful Easter weekend. Spring flowers are starting to come in and the stream banks are carpeted with tiny purple flowers and daffodils. The kids came up and we picked flowers and went for long walks. The garden’s first bulbs are popping up. We are getting ready to prepare raised beds for vegetables and seed grass in the bare areas. Many varieties of David Austen roses have been planted and hopefully we can get some of the climbers growing across the stone wall this year.
huh received a drone for his birthday and he took it for a test drive today. Sadly it crashed on its maiden voyage but we have some lovely photos from it! Hopefully it will be repaired soon so we can capture the trees turning green and the geese hatching chicks on the island in the lake.
Please join and me as we discuss the original haute bohemian and design visionary, Frederic Church. Today at noon EST, register at Olana.org. See you soon!
Good morning Turks and Caicos! The view from our suite. Last day of meetings and back to NYC. No we didn’t get a chance to jump in the water. There was no time with meetings starting at 7:30 am and dinner finishing at 10:30 pm. But we couldn’t be more grateful to witness the beauty of this island and to work with the most amazing people at . Truly a designers dream. 💫
In honor of Women’s History Month I’ve been delighted to speak about my experience as a woman and a designer. Tomorrow we partner up with at the with some of my favorite women of , Alisha Serras of , Boston, Detroit, and soon to be Florida, Chrissy Deeks of the Pace Companies, of all organized by and Tierra Porter from Kohler.
In 2019 I was asked to renovate a difficult space including an odd bathroom for in partnership with Kohler. Drama ensues with all trades throwing up their hands in the air saying they cannot make this impossible show house deadline. Enter Setta Tavitian from the Kohler team. She whipped the plumber, electrician, and general contractor into shape with her calm but firm demeanor. She instructed on all technical matters and gave helpful solutions. Miraculously all of these men listened to this woman. Even more miraculously, the project was done on time and all the plumbing worked beautifully.
As women, we have all faced being brushed off or not being heard in the room where it happens. How do you manage construction crews? Teams of architects and designers? In multiple states and countries? I have often turned to my friend Phoebe who is senior vice president at Related and asked- How do I manage hospitality and large construction projects? Also to my friend Alisha - how do you manage staff and crews and showrooms in multiple states? Our dear friend and powerhouse journalist Hadley Keller will be asking these kinds of questions. I hope to see you there and have this conversation with you!
