Founded by Dr. Shmuel Tatz in the 1980’s, Body Tuning & Physical Therapy is an out-patient clinic in NYC that works with a holistic approach.

Dr. Tatz and his associate, Daniel Padmos, work one-on-one with each patient to give the necessary attention to the body and its movements. They’ve worked with famous musicians and dancers, yoga practitioners, adults in their old age, sedentary workers, etc. Their goal is the same for everyone. To get the body moving at maximum potential, feeling the best it can, and avoiding the pitfalls of aging.

Dancers are prone to a variety of injuries due to the physical demands of their art form, including strains, sprains, stress fractures, tendonitis, and more.

Treatment for dancer injuries typically involves a combination of rest and rehabilitation.

Physical therapy plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation of dancer injuries. A physical therapist can design a personalized exercise program to improve strength, flexibility, and mobility, as well as address any muscle imbalances or weaknesses that may contribute to injury.

Massage therapy and manual techniques can help relieve muscle tension, improve circulation, and promote healing in injured tissues.

Modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, or laser therapy may be used as adjuncts to treatment to further reduce pain and inflammation and promote tissue healing.

In Body Tuning, we understand, that when it comes to working on dancers, there’s no part of the body that is not involved in the actions necessary to perform.

Many years ago when Ludwig sang in Jerusalem and gave a master class with the encouragement of Isaac Stern, she was tormented by a nasty neck sprain and migraine.

Someone recommended me. Already after the first treatment, she felt a lot better.

A few years later, I called Christa at her hotel in New York, and told that I had come to the city because my wife was studying piano at the Juilliard School.

We wanted to stay, so I was looking for new clients, and she was the first person I called.

She recommended me to others, and slowly I built up a list of clients.

Always when Christa came to New York, we had a meeting.

Only in New York could this happen!

Optimize your body for peak performance and vitality!❤️

My method is a self-evolved method based on intuition. It is neither osteopathic nor chiropractic.

So, Body Tuning draws various techniques, including ultrasound, electrical stimulation, magnets, yoga, shiatsu, and Swedish massage.

But the real magic is a touch. I practice the most ancient of medical arts, the laying on of hands.🎶

Are you tired of traditional workouts that leave you feeling sore and exhausted?

It's time to explore the rejuvenating world of aquatic exercises!

Aquatic exercises can be excellent for enhancing health and wellness because water provides a supportive and low-impact environment that reduces strain on joints while still offering resistance to muscles.

Start slowly, listen to your body, and gradually increase the intensity of your workouts as you become more comfortable in the water.

Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new exercise routine, especially if you have existing health conditions or concerns.

Remember, that regular aquatic exercise can improve heart health, lower blood pressure, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Enhance your health and wellness through stretching!

Perform stretching exercises to improve flexibility, reduce muscle tension, and prevent stiffness. A lot of people don't understand that stretching has to happen on a regular basis. Ideally, it should be daily.

It's most important to focus on the body areas needed for critical for mobility: your lower extremities: your calves, your hamstrings, your hip flexors in the pelvis and quadriceps in the front of the thigh.

Stretching your shoulders, neck, and lower back is also beneficial.
Stretching once today won't magically give you perfect flexibility.
It takes weeks to months to get flexible, and you'll have to continue working on it to maintain it.

So, aim for a program of daily stretches, or at least three or four times per week.

Always consult with a physical therapist or healthcare professional before starting any exercise program, especially if you have pre-existing health conditions or injuries.

Legacy behind the walls ❤️

As a physical therapist for many years, I've seen how much my work is like tuning a musical instrument. Imagine a piano tuner with their tools, carefully listening to the piano and making it sound beautiful again.

That's how I approach 'Body Tuning.' Instead of piano strings, I use my hands to help your body feel its best. I listen, I observe, and I work to restore your body's natural harmony, just like making music.🎶

05/01/2024

People who've worked with their hands for a long time can notice things that others might miss. Our hands can "feel" and sense vibrations from muscles, joints, and organs. This helps us find and relieve areas of stress and injury. As a result, your body will work smoothly like a finely tuned machine.

All breathing should be done through the nose with mouth closed at all times.

The mouth is for eating and the nose is for breathing.

Focus on taking the smallest and most silent breath possible.

Ultimately your breathing should be unnoticeable.

It is best to think of this cycle in two parts

I. Sip air in and immediately release

II. Rest in the pause at the bottom of the exhale until you feel a slight urge to repeat step one. Mindfully observe the relaxation of all breathing muscles during the pause.

As you practice you will notice that the time it takes for you to develop the urge to breath will gradually get longer. This means you are making progress.

You will also notice that when you release your breath into the pause, that many muscles relax as if you were sighing, especially around the upper ribs and neck area. Notice how the shoulders begin to slide down the back with each gentle exhale.

Your main goal is to spend more and more time in the pause cycle of breathing. Perhaps you can recall a time when you were reading a book and then suddenly thought to yourself, when was the last time I took a breath?

This is actually proper breathing. Unobtrusive with long periods of rest between gentle efforts of in and out.

This is the basic breath reduction exercise that we recommend practicing throughout the day.

Are you someone who spends most of their day sitting at a desk? Do you constantly experience low back pain, shoulder pain, and other body aches? Well, you’re not alone. In fact, a recent study by Frontier Public Health has confirmed that sedentary work can have negative effects on our bodies, such as back pain and mental health issues.

But with this new research, it’s clear that being more active and taking care of our bodies is crucial for our overall well-being. That’s where Body Tuning comes in.

At Body Tuning, we understand the importance of treating our bodies well, even if we don’t have a prescription for physical therapy. Don’t wait for your aches and pains to get worse and turn into bigger problems. Start your treatment with us before it reaches that point. Trust us to help you create a new way of working that prioritizes your health and well-being.

So, if you’re a sedentary worker looking for a solution to your body aches, give Body Tuning a try. Let’s work together to keep your body healthy and avoid unnecessary surgeries and pain.

20 years ago, I met Hanna through her husband, the Manhattan violin maker David Segal. Since then, she's been a loyal client.

Hanna's treatment is 80% using hands only and 20% individualized exercises. As a musician, she understands the importance of practice and discipline.

Just like a violin teacher, I listen and make suggestions to help her body stay in tune. Hanna doesn't wait for problems to escalate - she comes to me for a tune-up and it only takes a few sessions to feel better. I've learned so much from her and other musicians about their unique challenges and ailments.

I love hearing Hanna play, whether it's piano trios or Verdi's Requiem. She's an active chamber player and her passion for music is contagious. I'm grateful for her trust and the opportunity to help keep her body in harmony.

Jerzy Marchwinski's Journey to Recovery

About a decade ago, renowned Polish pianist Jerzy Marchwinski started losing control of his right hand. Within a few years, he had to stop playing altogether due to numbness and stiffness. His search for a solution led him across Europe, but it was during a visit to Manhattan that he met me.

Marchwinski had undergone numerous unsuccessful treatments before our meeting. He visited doctors in Poland, England, France, and the US, but no one could offer a solution. He even tried exercises and acupuncture in Paris, but nothing helped.

Frustrated and unable to play for three years, Marchwinski was desperate for a solution. He began playing with only his left hand but longed to reintroduce his right hand to the keyboard. At the suggestion of a friend, he turned to me for help.

I started by mobilizing Marchwinski's right hand joints and teaching him specific exercises. In just two weeks, Marchwinski began regaining control of his right hand and experienced overall relaxation in his body.

Marchwinski not only regained some control of his hand but also improved his overall physical movements and sleep quality. It was a transformative experience that brought hope and progress to his recovery journey.

As an active person, you may often experience issues with your knees, ankles, or lower back. That's why it's crucial to prioritize regular therapeutic sessions with a qualified professional.

Body-tuning technique is renowned for helping very physically active individuals stay injury-free. However, if you're unable to visit me in the New York area, I have some suggestions to help you maintain your optimal health and rhythm.

Firstly, if you're experiencing pain, it's essential to listen to your body. Stop any activities that exacerbate the pain and seek daily treatments from a physical therapist until the discomfort subsides.

When choosing a physical therapist, ensure they have at least 10-15 years of experience. During your sessions, the therapist should dedicate a minimum of 40 minutes to treating you, with a significant portion of that time devoted to hands-on treatment. It's crucial that they employ a variety of techniques tailored to your specific needs.

Furthermore, it's important for the therapist not only to address the affected joint but also to work on other body parts that may have been thrown out of alignment due to the injury.

By prioritizing regular therapeutic sessions and following these guidelines, you can proactively maintain your physical well-being and prevent injuries from hindering your active lifestyle. Remember, your health is your greatest asset!

How to Choose the Best Physical Therapist? Here's What You Need to Know! 💪

Just having a physical therapy license doesn't guarantee results. It's crucial to do your research and find the right therapist who will give you the attention and treatment you deserve.

Many patients I treat have seen other therapists before finding me.

Sadly, few have received the focused care they need.

A great therapist should spend time hands-on, targeting your specific issue with care and precision. You should feel relief, not pain, during the session, with open communication and understanding.

Experience matters, but not all experience is equal. Someone with years in a hospital may prioritize quick fixes, while others influenced by insurance may miss your needs entirely.

For the best care, look for a therapist with 10-15 years of independent experience, spending quality time with you one-on-one. With the right training and natural talent, they can deliver the results and relationship you need to heal.

Got some knee troubles? This week, let's help those achy joints feel better with these easy-to-follow moves

First up, we've got "The Lazy Kick" – it's not about kicking a ball, it's about loosening up those joints. Just move gently and let your body relax.

Next, try dragging your foot back – you might even hear a little sound like Daniel's shoes in the video. Keep it easy, keep it moving, and repeat!

Spend just 10 minutes on these exercises (but hey, longer is better!) for best results! 🙋

if you're dealing with an injury or body discomfort, it's important to find the right treatment and therapist to help you heal.

Let's say you've hurt your shoulder/rotator cuff, and everyday tasks like raising your arm or putting on a shirt are painful. You've done your homework and found lots of treatment options like massage therapy, acupuncture, traditional physical therapy, and alternative methods. Especially in a big city like New York, the choices seem endless.

Friends might offer advice, but only you know what's best for your body. Take the time to listen to yourself and choose one treatment approach. Jumping between different practitioners and therapies can confuse both you and the therapist, making it hard to know what's really working.

Once you've found a therapist who's helping, stick with it for a while. Give your shoulder time to heal. Commit to regular sessions—around 10 to 20—to start feeling the benefits. Be patient with yourself; recovery takes time and can be tough, but with the right therapist, you'll see improvements and feel better overall.

Remember, healing is a journey. Be kind to yourself and trust that with dedication, you'll get back to feeling your best. 💪

Before treatment with me, Composer and Guitarist Daniel Chynsky struggled with pain and stiffness in his shoulder, back, and forearms, hindering his ability to play guitar and compose music. Despite improvement after eight sessions, he still experienced pain that limited his professional performance.

With a grant from the Musician’s Foundation covering three additional sessions and my donation of six more, Daniel continued treatment with me and my partner, and former student Daniel Padmos. Together, we focused on recovery and provided helpful exercises to maintain strength and flexibility.

For musicians seeking effective treatment for performance-related physical pain, Body Tuning Physical Therapy is here to help.
