When your immune system can't tell the difference between 'friend' and 'foe'!

The scene is set within the human body, where a battle is about to unfold. On one side, we have the immune system. Its mission is to protect the body from harmful invaders, the pathogens. This pathogen has craftily disguised itself to look similar to the body's own cells. As a result, the antibody find itself scratching its head in confusion. It can't distinguish between the genuine 'self' cells and the devious invaders due to their shared molecular traits, represented in the cartoon by the pink antigens. This phenomenon is called molecular mimicry. When the immune system struggles to differentiate between friend and foe, it can mistakenly attack the body's own tissues, leading to various autoimmune disorders.

Mirimus is unraveling the mysteries of molecular mimicry and its role in autoimmune diseases. Through our cutting-edge research, they aim to shed light on the intricate mechanisms behind these disorders, paving the way for potential breakthroughs in diagnosis and treatment.

🧬Mirimus brings RNAi technology to its peak. But what is RNAi after all? 🤔

Every high school biology student learns the basics of how genes are expressed: DNA, the cell’s master information keeper, is copied into messenger RNA, which carries protein-building instructions to the ribosome, the part of the cell where proteins are assembled.

But it turns out the picture is far more complicated than that. In recent years, biologists have discovered a myriad of other molecules that fine-tune this process, including several types of RNA. Through a naturally occurring phenomenon known as RNA interference (RNAi), short strands of RNA can selectively intercept and destroy messenger RNA before it delivers its instructions.

Scientists are now pursuing disease treatments based on RNAi, which offers the tantalizing ability to shut down any gene in the body. Indeed, such molecules are now employed for the development of vaccines, regulation of the gene expression, and creation of aptamers binding specific targets. Mirimus Therapeutics department aims to harness the power of the RNAi machinery to develop novel and highly specific treatments to be used in several pathological conditions. Thanks to our broad expertise in RNAi, we are able to generate artificial microRNAs with enhanced processing and specificity to precisely target and efficiently silence genes that are known to be detrimental in a given pathology.
