“Here There Are Blueberries” went from a mere idea to a reading to a world-premiere production in 2022 and a Pulitzer Prize Finalist in 2024. And that’s just the beginning...

“In Germany, the propaganda was so strong – it was so effective. They were taught that they were doing it for a higher purpose. I was testifying against two N**i Germans who worked in Auschwitz and this old man said ‘I was trained to obey orders. I was told that the Jews are hurting my country, that they are destroying my country.’ Patriotism of his kind was so strong that he couldn’t let go of it.”

“We do, to some extent, a disservice when we talk about the Holocaust and only talk about the victims. It is incredibly important to memorialize them. We are also not going to figure out how the Holocaust happened by studying the victims, so we have to study the perpetrators. We have to look at how German society got to the point where all of these young people are volunteering for this work and thinking that this work is important and why their government has taught them that and how they have come to believe it.”

- Dr. Rebecca Erbelding as told to Anderson Cooper on CBS “60 Minutes”

“Here There Are Blueberries” tells the story of Dr. Rebecca Erbelding’s discovery of a never-before-seen album of 116 photos belonging to an SS officer from Auschwitz. When the images went public, Tectonic Theater Project Artistic Director Moisés Kaufman was shocked by what he saw: “I got goosebumps. I remember thinking many of the people of my family died in Auschwitz and these are the people who were doing it – and they don’t seem to have any remorse.” After meeting with Dr. Erbelding, Kaufman developed the play with original Tectonic company member Amanda Gronich. Now on stage at New York Theatre Workshop until June 30th, “Here There Are Blueberries” explores the chilling events surrounding the album’s discovery.

If you missed the piece, you can follow the link in bio to watch it in full.
