👀Don’t miss Gibney Company’s performances of two important works by Twyla Tharp at The Joyce May 7-12: The Fugue (1970) and Bach Duet (1974) accompanied by live music.
Bach Duet, reconstructed for the first time since its premiere in 1974, grounds the ethereal music of Bach’s 78th Cantata in tangible action. The dance begins when one dancer spits on the floor, a common action for dancers looking to get more traction. Bach Duet premiered at the Delacorte Theater of Central Park in New York City on September 5, 1974. Gibney Company’s performance of Bach Duet at The Joyce Theater is a company premiere.
Modeled on The Musical Offering by Johann Sebastian Bach, The Fugue consists of a twenty-count theme which is developed into twenty variations. The theme is modified through a number of reversals, inversions, retrogrades and repetitions, re-sequencing, and rhythmic manipulations. Each of the three dancers represents a musical register: bass, alto, soprano. The only sound is the dancers’ footfalls on an amplified stage. *The Fugue premiered at the University of Massachusetts Amherst on August 1, 1970. Gibney Company premiered this work on February 6-7, 2024 at the Holland Dance Festival.

📣 TODAY IS THE DAY! Gibney Company’s Joyce Season Tickets on Sale at 12 PM
Gibney Company returns to The Joyce in May with a dynamic program of world premieres and historic restagings that showcases what the New York Times described as “the troupe’s superpower . . . its strong and versatile dancers, artists who appear to be physically capable of anything.”
In a special collaboration with the choreographer Twyla Tharp, the Company debuts two seminal works from the artist’s canon, The Fugue from 1970, and Bach Duet reconstructed for the first time since its premiere in 1974. The Company performs a new work by Jermaine Spivey and Spenser Theberge that delves into time as an instigator, space as a character, memory as a form of physicality, and the value of individuality as a path to upholding community. Making their Joyce debut is Yue Yin with a tour favorite, A Measurable Existence (2022), that explores those moments when we discover frightening, challenging and ultimately sustaining aspects of ourselves.
