often associated with poverty and overcrowding but also with vibrant cultural and artistic

After a year and a half, the Covid saga has not yet reached its conclusion. In fact, more stringent protocols are being put in place as the highly contagious Delta variant has interrupted what appeared to be steady progress towards resuming normal life. Brooklyn College will only be reopening its campus in a limited way. At this point, we cannot know when BLL’s on-campus classes will resume. Nonetheless, BLL is not only keeping many of its long-standing classes active, but also introducing new innovative and stimulating courses and lectures. Many who were Zoom-shy at first have gradually overcome their concerns and rejoined the ranks of engaged, curious and opinionated lifelong learners.
Our plan is to continue Zooming with one another for our classes until we are able to return to campus. We have a solid schedule planned for the fall. In addition, we are now looking forward to actually being with one another. BLL's fall plans include in-person outdoor, off-campus activities. Brooklyn Borough Historian Ron Schweiger will continue his series of walking tours. The very popular Museum Walks and Talks are resuming. A lunch get-together is also scheduled. An abbreviated list of fall activities is shown below. You may visit our website at BLL.brooklyn.cuny.edu, for more information about our program.
We look forward to seeing you in class or at one of our BLL Outdoors activities.

BLL Online Membership Application Brooklyn College is an integral part of the civic, urban, and artistic energy of New York and uses the entire city as a living classroom that broadens our students' understanding of the world around them.
This fall, BLL is offering a wide range of in-person activities so we can safely get together outdoors or in distanced situations. We are excited to announce that we have just added a new tour that will show us the beautiful Jamaica Bay branch of Gateway National Park.
All the outside activities require pre-registration and are first-come, first-serve, so if you are interested, please sign up as soon as possible. In addition, all the tours require membership in BLL for the September 2021-August 2022 year. If you have not yet rejoined, please do so now.
We are all anxious to return to on-campus activities, but there is still much uncertainty as conditions continue to change. BLL has developed robust programming on Zoom in which many of you participate. For those of you who have been reluctant but now want to give it a try, let the office know and we will help you get started. But regardless of whether you wish to go on trips or attend remote classes, please help maintain the organization by joining now. We'd love to welcome you back.

Fall 2021 Edition
**NEW**
Plants of the Bay Friday, October 1st 10:30 am
At a presentation about the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge back in June, many members were intrigued to learn about this hidden gem of the National Park Service right in our vicinity and expressed the desire to visit. We arranged for a free Ranger-led tour so we can go out and see it in person.
The plants at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge have a story to tell about the park, New York City, and the world! Let the plants share their history of how they came to be at Jamaica Bay, as we learn how to identify flowers, trees, and vines, from prickly pear cactus to poison ivy.
Effort level: The distance will be about 0.5 miles as a portion of the trail is closed and we will be stopping often to look at and discuss the plants. The terrain is mostly gravel, but also some grass/dirt, and a small portion will be on a panel boardwalk. It should last around 1-1.5 hours. There are many places on nearby Cross Bay Blvd. for lunch afterwards.
If you would like to attend, contact us preferably by email ([email protected]) or else call the office (718-951-5647) and leave a message. Be sure to include your telephone number in your email or phone message since the trip may be canceled in case of inclement weather. In addition, if you are driving and would be able to give a ride to other members, please let us know that too, including how many people you could drive.

Getting Ready for Short Stories
“The Overcoat” by Nikolai Gogol will be the debut short story when classes resume on Sept. 13th. We're sending the link earlier than usual because it is longer than most of the stories we discuss. It also has a hefty reputation: “We all came out of Gogol’s ‘Overcoat’,” the most famous apocryphal saying of Russian literature, is attributed to Dostoevsky. It suggests not only that Gogol was the great source of the Russian novel but that his works lent themselves to a wide enough range of interpretations for his overcoat to shelter, comfortably, future Turgenevs, Chekhovs, Dostoevskys, and Tolstoys. Featured Presentation
On Tuesday morning, a lecture and video presentation on ISLAMIC SPAIN by Maria Rose Cassius will increase our knowledge of the expansion of Islamic civilization to the West. The Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula had a profound impact on European culture.
Looking Ahead
Since it takes a while to read a book, let alone several of them, our planned books are listed below, along with descriptions of the books for October. (Descriptions of the September books were provided previously.)
Contemporary Book Club
Sept. 14 “The Warmth of Other Suns” by Isabel Wilkerson
Oct. 5th “The Boy in the Field” by Margot Livesey
Nov. 2nd “Beheld” by Tara Shea Nesbit
Dec. 7th “Hamnet” by Maggie O'Farrell
The Boy in the Field
One September afternoon in 1999, teenagers Matthew, Zoe, and Duncan Lang are walking home from school when they discover a boy lying in a field, bloody and unconscious. Thanks to their intervention, the boy’s life is saved. In the aftermath, all three siblings are irrevocably changed.
Written with the deceptive simplicity and power of a fable, The Boy in the Field showcases Margot Livesey’s unmatched ability to “tell her tale masterfully, with intelligence, tenderness, and a shrewd understanding of all our mercurial human impulses” (Lily King, author of Euphoria). A New York Times Notable Book of the Year.
The Four Gilead Novels by Marilynne Robinson
Oct. 12th “Gilead”
Nov. 9th “Home”
Nov. 30th “Lila”
Jan. 4th “Jack”
Gilead
In 1956, toward the end of Reverend John Ames's life, he begins a letter to his young son, an account of himself and his forebears. Ames is the son of an Iowan preacher and the grandson of a minister who, as a young man in Maine, saw a vision of Christ bound in chains and came west to Kansas to fight for abolition. It tells how wisdom was forged in Ames's soul during his solitary life, and how history lives through generations, pervasively present even when betrayed and forgotten.
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award, Gilead is a hymn of praise and lamentation to the God-haunted existence that Reverend Ames loves passionately, and from which he will soon part.
Classic Book Club
September 28 “Swann’s Way: In Search of Lost Time, Vol. 1” by Marcel Proust
October 26 “The Scarlet Letter: A Romance” by Nathaniel Hawthorne
November 16 “Heart of Darkness” by Joseph Conrad
December 21 “The Mill on the Floss” by George Elliot
The Scarlet Letter
Set in Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony during the years 1642 to 1649, the novel tells the story of Hester Prynne, who conceives a daughter through an affair and then struggles to create a new life of repentance and dignity. Containing a number of religious and historic allusions, the book explores themes of legalism, sin, and guilt.
The book, though corresponding in its tone and burden to some of the shorter stories, had a more startling and dramatic character, and a strangeness, which at once took hold of a larger public than any of those had attracted. Though imperfectly comprehended, and even misunderstood in some quarters, it was seen to have a new and unique quality and Hawthorne's reputation became national.
Mystery Book Club
September 21 “Dissolution” (The Shardlake Series Book 1) by C. J. Sansom
October 19 “The Daughter of Time” (Inspector Alan Grant Book 5) by Josephine Tey
November 23 “Restless” by William Boyd
December 14 “A Question of Proof” (The Nigel Strangeways Mysteries #1) by Nicholas Blake
The Daughter of Time (Inspector Alan Grant Book 5)
The Daughter of Time is a 1951 detective novel by Josephine Tey, concerning a modern police officer's investigation into the alleged crimes of King Richard III of England. In 1995 it was voted number four in The Top 100 Mystery Novels of All Time list compiled by the Mystery Writers of America.
Inspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard, recuperating from a broken leg, becomes fascinated with a contemporary portrait of Richard III that bears no resemblance to the Wicked Uncle of history. Could such a sensitive, noble face actually belong to one of the world’s most heinous villains—a venomous hunchback who may have killed his brother’s children to make his crown secure? Or could Richard have been the victim, turned into a monster by the usurpers of England’s throne?
If you haven’t yet done so, please be sure to renew your BLL membership so you can join us for these and all our other classes and trips this fall.

Sincerely,
Joan Meyer
