This little gouache painting was in preparation for a larger oil work I painted in New York several years ago.

Works on paper are so charming 🩵

Last year I brought my paints and plein air setup to Florida and convinced my Dad to sit for a portrait for me. He agreed to pose for two sessions. He was a spectacular model. Though the painting is kind of rough and the oil thin, I’m so happy I’ll have his portrait and the memory of painting him in my heart always.

Oh, has this been a labor of love… and I’m STILL not finished with her.

But, I will say I’ve been learning a lot about planning and approach and self-trust while working on her.

I’d been holding out on posting until she was finished, but I’m not forcing her timeline any longer. I do, however, see the light of the end of the tunnel, but who knows.. This one may have a few more surprises up her sleeve.

The portrait series I’m working on is back on the easel. I’ve had such a good time revisiting some of my older works and sending them off to their new collectors 🤩

And now my heart is nestling back into its happiest place.. painting from life.

Daina’s portrait is ready for its final pass now.. and I’m scheduling my next sitter asap.

It’s been hard to be inspired to paint this past few weeks. It’s felt almost frivolous.. on the other side of that coin is the healing I experience when I paint. It’s a meditation that roots me into this very present moment.. not the past or future, or in fear. It’s a portal for momentary peace, if only I allow myself to walk through it.

This one is on the easel and I’m really close to calling her finished. Revisiting this piece that I started some eleven years ago has been playful and rewarding.

I wish you could see her in person, her canvas is a generous size at 40x30”. She definitely holds her own space.

I few more strategic lines and some tightening of tones.. then I’m hoping that she find her person. I think she has a few secrets to share.

When I’m feeling out of balance, I ask myself the basics.
Did I eat enough today?
Did I drink enough water?
Did I paint?

It feels so good to be in this sacred space.

Over a decade ago in 2012, 'North' flew out of my hands and onto canvas. I may love her even more now than I did then.
