Artist Statement
My passions are feminism, art and politics, which reflect my feelings and identity as a woman. Landscapes and figures remain my vehicles for seeking new ways to create art, inspiring me to make figures come alive, build landscapes from Chinese characters and explode color to excite the viewer.
Paintings transform my fantasy of ancient Chinese scrolls into vibrant bold colors reflecting the dramatic changes I have seen in my China travels beginning in 1982. They are informed by my own personal evolution as an artist and a woman.
My graphite pencil drawings of the ancient kingdom and beyond depict a playful and evocative perspective through the simple use of a single medium. From China, across the silk road, India, Bhutan, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, Safari in South Africa, through South America to Easter Island, my travels inspire me to incorporate elements of the world's great architectural and visual history into my works. Enjoying the action of creation, I hope the viewer finds the fun and the sensuality to their liking.
