Attack of the 50-Foot Movie

ATTACK OF THE 50-FOOT MOVIE is a monthly event where we watch cult movies in the back of a bar.

10/04/2024

We're back… and just in time for Halloween!

In what may just become a yearly tradition, we’re bringing back my favorite heavy metal horror movie, Trick or Treat!

This hair-raising classic stars Marc “Don’t call me Skippy” Price as Ragman, a troubled teenage headbanger who brings back his favorite dead rock star the only way he knows how: by playing records backwards!

With special guest appearances by Gene “original hair” Simmons and Ozzy “no memory of anything he did that year” Osbourne, and an ear-blistering soundtrack by the one and only Fastway!

Plus, you’ll be subjected to yet another one-of-a-kind Halloween-themed trailer show. And we’ll be opening the night with a special LIVE appearance by a burlesque performer so terrifying we can’t even tell you her name yet!

More scary details coming soon!

Vincent Price was more than just a world-renowned horror star. Originally a Fine Arts student, the St. Louis native began acting while attending grad school in England in the 1930s. In the the '40s, he went to Hollywood, where he became a successful character actor, and a bit of a heartthrob.

He was known for taking a variety of roles—including a part "The Ten Commandments" and various TV dramas— but his appearance in the classic 1950s horror films "House of Wax", "The Fly", and "The House on Haunted Hill" sealed his title as the Master of the Macabre.

It was a reputation he ran with in the 1960s, starring in a stream of Edgar Allen Poe adaptations directed by Roger Corman. But by the mid-'60s, Price was already parodying his own persona, particularly with "Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine" (a MAJOR influence on Austin Powers) and his recurring role as Egghead in the original "Batman" TV series.

In the early '70s, he starred in two legendary horror-comedies: "The Abominable Dr. Phibes", and this Tuesday's Attack of the 50-Foot Movie feature, "THEATER OF BLOOD".

In his personal life, Price was openly bisexual to his friends and family, and, according to her book, he was incredibly supportive of his le***an daughter's coming out. He was an avid art collector, a gourmet cook who authored several cookbooks, and, by all accounts, was an absolute joy to work with—the one exception being a fight that he allegedly started on the set of "Batman", using real eggs.

Join us tomorrow at Minnie's Bar, where we will celebrate this icon with a group screening of "Theater of Blood", plus a special Vincent Price tribute video at intermission.

Also: LIVE horror burlesque by RAINA SINCLAIR! We think Vincent would approve.

By the end of the 1960s, the name Vincent Price was already synonymous with a certain style of melodramatic Horror—thanks in no small part to his vivid, Poe-inspired collaborations with the great Roger Corman.

Starting in the ’70s, Price set his sights on a more comedic, self-consciously Camp brand of monster movie—exemplified by 1971’s ridiculously dark horror-comedy classic, “The Abominable Dr. Phibes”. This was followed two years later by this month’s feature: the slightly more conventional—but no less tongue-in-cheek—“Theater of Blood”.

“Theater of Blood” is the story of Edward Lionheart, a scenery-munching Shakespearean actor who, after being humiliated by the local Theater Critics Guild, tries to take his own life. He survives the attempt, and vows to exact his revenge. But—drama queen that he is—these are no ordinary murders. Instead, he decides to kill off each of his critics one-by-one, in a highly dramatic manner that loosely mirrors the plots of Shakespeare’s greatest works.

Lionheart’s deadly theatrics are aided by his adoring daughter, Edwina, played with delicious sincerity by Diana Rigg, who at the time was still hot—and I do mean hot—off her role as Emma Peel in the British TV series “The Avengers”.

And speaking of hot: This month, we’ll be opening our screening with a LIVE horror-themed burlesque act by the one and only Raina Sinclair!

It’s all happening Tuesday, July 30th at Minnie's Bar Bk in Brooklyn, starting at 7pm.

See you there… if you dare!

If you were a child in the early 1980s, at some point you probably wanted to be a breakdancer. What started as an underground competition among rival street gangs in the Bronx had, by 1984, become a full-blown fad among American kids of all colors and backgrounds. As usual, the powers of media and advertising were ready to swoop in and exploit this new, potentially dangerous trend for all it was worth.

And when it came to ripping off a cultural phenomenon, no one did it more blatantly—or with more bombast—than the infamous Cannon Films. In a truly serendipitous combination of timing, judgement, and good distribution deals, Cannon struck gold in early 1984 with “Breakin'”. Despite a predictable plot (“We’re gonna teach the white girl to dance!”) and some cringey attempts at drama, the film’s goofy spirit and well-executed dance scenes were enough to capture kids’ minds, fueling what was already quickly becoming a massive cash grab. Never one to turn their backs on an obvious financial opportunity, Cannon quickly rushed out a sequel to the film.

The result, “Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo”, answered the age-old question: “What if we took an already paper-thin concept and made it as ridiculous as possible?” Whereas the original at least pretended to be rooted in some form of authentic street culture, “Breakin’ 2” pulled no punches: Between its awkward “dance fights”, its musical theater-style hospital production number, a full “dancing on the ceiling” sequence, and one of the most obvious mismatched-stuntman moments in modern film history, “Breakin’ 2”, in the parlance of more modern times, gave zero f***s. So much that, forty years later, the dance term “Electric Boogaloo” has now become synonymous with “subpar sequel”.

Join us on Tuesday, May 28th in the back room of Minnie’s Bar for a celebration of this messy gem.

Trailer: LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS 04/04/2024

In 1980, director and music producer Lou Adler teamed up with Oscar-winning screenwriter Nancy Dowd to create “Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains”, the story of an all-girl, skunk-haired punk-rock band who—despite the derision of basically everyone—gain a strong female following and become stars… at a price, of course.

Starring then-unknown teenagers Diane_Lane and Laura Dern—as well as members of the S*x Pistols, The Clash, and The Tubes—the film sat in limbo for two years while the director and screenwriter tussled over the ending. Finally, in 1982, it got a tiny release, to very little critical or box-office response.

Shortly after, however, the film got picked up by the now legendary late-night cable show “Night Flight”, and soon gained a cult following. Based on this success, it became a staple on the midnight art house circuit for a few years, before fading into relative obscurity.

In the early 1990s, with the emergence of the Riot Grrrl movement, the movie was celebrated as an influence by bands such as Bikini Kill and Bratmobile, and gained new traction as a must-see cult movie. The fact that it had never been officially released on home video only added to its mystique. I can personally attest that, by the mid ’90s, underground video stores were judged by whether or not they had a blurry bootleg VHS copy of “Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains” for rent.

The movie finally got a proper video release in 2008, and has since been widely celebrated as a pioneering work in both feminist and punk rock circles.

Join us as we celebrate this truly ahead-of-its-time movie. More details coming soon!

In the 1980s, French New Wave director Barbet Schroeder commissioned famed poet and drinker Charles Bukowski to write a screenplay.

The result was "BARFLY", possibly the world's most eloquent argument for day drinking, starring an absolutely smoldering Faye Dunaway, and peak original-face Mickey Rourke.
