Students across the US are demanding that their universities disclose and divest from companies that support the Israeli occupation. These brave protesters understand that their institutions and their tuition fees are supporting this genocide. But even if you’re not a student at one of these big colleges, the misuse of money is clear.
Israel controls everything that enters and leaves Gaza (including books to read, and bricks to build colleges) but the people of Gaza still managed to create 12 universities to educate themselves. Palestine has one of the highest adult literacy rates in the entire world.
Now Israel, with the support of the US, has now severely damaged or entirely destroyed every single one of those universities.
Children in Gaza have not been able to attend school since October. In the West Bank too, children are forced to miss school or do remote learning because of Israeli road closures and Israeli settler violence. Call it educide, call it scholasticide, call it epistemicide - whatever words you say, it reveals the desire to eradicate Palestinian culture and dignity. It also shows us that the US government is far more interested in its allyship with Israel than educating its own people.

In 1968—the year of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and the signing of the Civil Rights Act—Gilliam began staining and folding raw canvases and suspending them from the wall, creating immersive bleeds of color.
The works’ tension and free fall—subject to forces beyond the artist’s control—paralleled the social turmoil of the time.
As a Black artist and civil rights leader, Gilliam deliberately worked against the grain. Unlike many of his peers, he refrained from literal depictions or messages in his art. He was committed to abstraction, stating, “the expressive act of making a mark and hanging it in space is always political. My work is as political as it is formal.”

This week we are highlighting organizations that are working tirelessly to end the conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians.
The Palestinian movement Women of the Sun and the Israeli movement Women Wage Peace agree to work together with determination, persistence and mutual respect in order to bring about the end to the long and bloody conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
This is a historical partnership of women which aims to encourage both sides to support a peaceful resolution of the conflict and to bring the leaders of both sides back to the negotiation table in order to sign an agreement which would ensure freedom, peace and security to women and men on both sides and to our children and future generations.

What does adolescence feel like?🪞
Hellen Van Meene photographs adolescence, capturing it as a fleeting, transitional stage. Van Meene’s images, small and square in format, show her anonymous models at a close half- or three-quarter length range.
Instead of confronting the camera, the young women in these photographs avert their gaze, appearing to be caught by the camera in private, unguarded moments of introspection.
Van Meene purposefully creates a friction between her artful composition and the realism of the unaltered bodies of her subjects, capturing the uneasy tension between the girls’ lingering childhood and their upcoming adulthood.
In their careful arrangement of color, light, and texture, her works imitate traditional, 17th-century paintings from the artist’s native Netherlands, like in the softly lit domestic interior that recall paintings of Johannes Vermeer. ..

Untitled Figure, Unnamed Fugue is crafted as a saltwater taffy flavored dinner party of senses-as-memories. Audiences slip across the worlds of our protagonist, who is embodied by all twelve performers. Together, we swing through time on a pendulum of potential; like line on a fishing reel, the next wave lapping onto shore, or the promise of time well spent.
Organized as a collection of twelve memories-as-moments, “1-11” is performed downstairs for multiple seatings of small audiences, while “12” is screened upstairs where folks are invited to grab a glass of wine or sparkling water.

Today we are highlighting the largest grassroots peace movement in Israel.
The movement is non-partisan and does not support any one specific solution to the conflict. Instead, it empowers women from diverse communities to build trust across divides, leading in turn to a unified demand for diplomatic negotiation, with full representation of women, to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Once a month, The Floor is holding a Self Care class with proceeds being donated to this organization. Please join us.

Using a brand new account, I put two questions to ChatGPT (a computing system that gives people answers based on a summary of huge amounts of publicly accessible information).
This is why I care about fair journalism, why I care about headlines that say Palestinians “died” and Israelis were “killed” - because we are documenting the present for future artificial intelligence, algorithms and government policies and calculations for how many bombs to buy and where to send them to. ChatGPT, like all artificial intelligence, has been taught by us. We have a responsibility to be thoughtful about how we use our words and to think critically about the words we’re reading, even the ones presented by supposedly neutral sources.
All people deserve justice. But real justice can’t be had if “it’s complicated” for some of us but not for others.
Our silence on social media in the past weeks has been one of choice.
Instead of projecting outward, we turned our focus inward to our immediate community, to hold space and conversations about the developing war and grief throughout the world.
A common thread through all these conversations is the profound sadness of our loss of collective humanity. We have a challenge ahead of us.
The Floor will be holding an ongoing, once a month, Self Care class with all proceeds being split between and
