🇲🇽Priest Marcelo, a Tzotzil priest from Chiapas, Mexico, was a passionate defender of Mother Earth 🌍 and human rights. Dedicated to social justice and peacebuilding, he faced threats due to his work and had been granted precautionary protection by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights since 2015.

His tragic murder on October 20 reflects the alarming rise in violence in Chiapas, putting human rights defenders and Indigenous communities at greater risk.
We demand that authorities in Mexico conduct a thorough investigation into this terrible crime, ensuring truth and justice for Father Marcelo. We also call on the Mexican State to address the situation in Chiapas from a human rights perspective, rebuilding communities ravaged by violence driven by private interests.

📢 We stand united against violence, in defense of Mother Earth and human rights.

🌍✨ On July 28, 2022, the UN General Assembly made history by recognizing the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment—a huge win for environmental and human rights advocates globally! 🙌

But the real challenge? Turning this into action.

Last September, ESCR-Net’s Environment & ESCR Working Group published a brief diving into the history of this right, what it means for communities facing the climate crisis, and the core principles and state obligations needed for real change.💡🌱

Our members are leading collective struggles for this right at national, regional, and international levels. Help us share and read the full brief in our bio! 🔗

✨From 16-20 September 2024, ESCR-Net more than 100 members convened for our pivotal Global Strategy Meeting (GSM) in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Confronting the immense challenges of the past few years, we renewed bonds of solidarity and reinforced collective action to make human rights and social justice a reality for all.

📍Over five days, we worked to chart strategies for building a future rooted in justice, dignity, and care for people and the planet. This summit demonstrated the power of international solidarity in the face of multiple global crises. Check the blog in our bio that summarises the highlights of the summit.

People or profit? 💸

Activists and campaigners asked this question last month, raising concerns over corporate capture of global governance, during the Summit of the Future in New York. 🇺🇳

The global debt crisis is worsening as countries struggle with interest payments amid harsh economic situations.

🇰🇪 In Kenya, debt conditionalities, austerity measures and the imposition of neoliberal policies by the IMF has drastically impacted people’s rights, including access to healthcare and education, leading to massive protests countrywide.

Through our letter of demands (link in bio) we call on the IMF to cancel debts for impoverished countries, and stop imposing unjust structural reforms, policies and laws that violate people’s rights in Kenya and globally. 🌎

07/11/2024

🇰🇪 The people of Kenya put a stop to the unfair Finance Bill 2024. But the fight continues. We are appalled at the recent violent repression of protests in Kenya. The Kenyan government is considering austerity measures that threaten basic rights to housing, health, and education. This hurts the most vulnerable, especially women.

Brutal repression of peaceful protests is unacceptable and a grave violation of international human rights law. We call on the Kenyan government to:

1. Stop police brutality
2. Conduct independent investigations into killings, abductions & torture
3. Release all abducted protestors immediately
4. Engage in dialogue with civil society
4. Ensure security forces operate within the law & respect human rights
5. Protect Human Rights Defenders

📈🏦 As we gear up for the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB), scheduled from April 15-21 in Washington DC, the conversation around crippling debt burdens is taking center stage.

💵These meetings bring together governments, multilateral and bilateral lenders, and various institutions to discuss the challenges facing the global financial architecture.

✊🏾🌎 However, amidst these discussions, a critical issue often overlooked by the mainstream is gaining momentum: the global movement advocating for debt cancellation, particularly for Global South countries.

💰In our last newsletter, we delved into the intersection of debt, corporate capture and climate, and provide with analysis, tools and resources to inspire action to confront the models imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, and private creditors, which prioritize creditors’ profits and corporate interests at the expense of labor rights, environmental protection, democratic processes, and public spending to ensure human rights to healthcare, education, food and more.

🚨We also aim to challenge the dominant narrative propagated by economic and financial elites, who use convoluted language to obscure the injustices within the system.

💵Transnational corporations exploit ideas of feminism and gender equality to improve their image in some countries, while systematically abusing women’s human rights in other parts of the world.

Feminists for a Binding Treaty is a coalition of over 30 human rights organizations that express concern that women’s empowerment, once a radical feminist idea of transforming society, has been manipulated and reduced to an individualistic focus on self-esteem, entrepreneurship, and consumerism.

🇰🇪| Since November 2, 2023, the Kenyan government has been carrying out forced evictions of the Ogiek Peoples, in the Mau Forest. At the same time, the government continues to deny the Endorois Peoples’ return to their ancestral home and reparations for their forced eviction recognized by the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights after 14 years.

✊🏿🗓️ , in Nairobi, at 11 AM, more than 50 community representatives and activists will deliver letters to the Attorney General urging compliance with Kenya’s human rights obligations.

🚨They will deliver to the Attorney General of Kenya’s office in Nairobi two call-to-action letters demanding the government immediately implement the Commission and Court rulings to ensure justice and reparations for the Endorois and Ogiek Peoples.

🔔 : HAPPENING NEXT TUESDAY 🔔
✊🏿 The repeated failure of the Kenyan government to implement the decision of the African Commission and Court in the Endorois and the Ogiek cases, respectively, deepens decades of inequality, violations, and neglect.

📆Next Tuesday, February 6th, more than 30 community representatives and activists will gather in Nairobi to take action against violations committed by the Kenyan government against the rights of ancestral communities.

🚨Despite strong judgments issued by international courts requiring the government to make reparations to the Ogiek and Endorois communities for forcibly displacing them from their lands in the pursuit of tourism and conservation projects, the Kenyan government persists in denying these communities the right to return to their ancestral homes and refuses reparations for their forced eviction.
