Four years after pandemic, we check in with child care providers on the journey to rebuild - The Hechinger Report 09/12/2024

Four years after pandemic, The Hechinger Report checks in with child care providers on the journey to rebuild. These workers saw their livelihood irreversibly changed by coronavirus. Their recovery has been steady, but slow, according to the article.

"Nearly all of the half dozen women I interviewed for my 2021 story had been seriously debilitated by Covid in some way: financially, emotionally, medically. And this spring, three years later, with a new report from the RAPID Survey Project at Stanford Center on Early Childhood showing that child care providers are suffering from record rates of anxiety and depression, I decided to check in with this dedicated group of caregivers. Nationally, an estimated 1 million paid caregivers provide child care out of their homes to about 3 million children," the article reads.

Published in Huffpost, read Emily Tisshaw's account of the surprising things customers have said to her as a customer service employee and manager with a physical disability.

Says Emily, "A lot of the time disabled people are able to do things just as well — or even better — than our able-bodied counterparts, but we do them slightly differently, or perhaps a little slower. Instead of receiving more time or understanding for differences, we face confused onlookers and condescending attitudes. But it doesn’t have to be this way."

Should teachers customize their lessons or just stick to the ‘script’?

Some educators say district-provided curricula aren’t culturally relevant and don’t serve student needs, according to this article from The Hechinger Report.

“Teachers say curricula aren’t culturally relevant or inclusive, don’t prioritize a student’s perspective, ability and experience and seem to be created by providers who are removed from the classroom. In some cases, teachers say a lack of professional development on how to implement a curriculum can make it hard to use,” the article reads.
