The Fall Semester is in full swing. Student groups are a wonderful opportunity to get involved, learn and meet new people!
CEA and ASCE, both clubs of the Department of Civil, Construction, & Environmental Engineering, co-hosted a successful networking BBQ for our members. We had several students, industry representatives, and faculty attend. Attendees were able to network and enjoy food in the DuPont Structures Lab. The event would not have been successful without the help of the DuPont Structures Lab's leadership and our caterer, Botto's Italian Line.
2024 annual Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering Career Fair took place yesterday.
A new layout enabled an increase in the number of companies present. We had 60 employers and 227 students in attendance!
Thank you to the University of Delaware Career Center for organizing a successful event! Specifically, Sarah Palmer

We're proud to share that PhD student Christopher Kolade Alegbeleye successfully participated in the BRIGHTE Workshop hosted by the NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) this past summer, August 12-13, 2024. Christopher was among an elite group of 14 students selected nationwide for the project titled "Exploring Coastal Resilience and Flood Risk through Geospatial Storytelling." Discover more about this fascinating workshop here: [Exploring Coastal Resilience and Flood Risk through Geospatial Storytelling] https://gis.ucar.edu/events/2024/exploring-coastal-resilience-and-flood-risk-through-geospatial-storytelling
Christopher is pursuing his PhD in Transportation and Civil Infrastructure Systems under the supervision of Professor Rachel Davidson. His involvement in the Coastal Hazards, Equity, Economic Prosperity, and Resilience Hub project is integral to his studies. This project, a significant five-year initiative funded by a $16.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation’s Coastlines and People (CoPe) program, is housed in the Disaster Research Center.
As a Research Assistant, Christopher's work on developing computational models to predict hurricane damage and quantify losses to mobile manufactured homes and residential structures is of utmost importance. His contributions are crucial to our understanding of structural resilience in the face of natural disasters.
Congratulations to Christopher on his impressive achievement at the workshop! We look forward to his continued contributions to the field of coastal resilience.
Sustainable concrete | UDaily UD engineers create sidewalk pavers using non-recyclable plastics, reducing natural resource usage while keeping plastic waste out of landfills
Dr. Sue McNeil and her team from the University of Delaware, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering joined the Center for Integrated Asset Management for Multimodal Transportation Infrastructure Systems (CIAMTIS) at the 18th Annual Interuniversity Symposium on Infrastructure Asset Management (AISIM) held in Boulder Colorado on May 17.
Graduate students Sajjad Safari and Kiyarash Aminfar (George Mason University) presented work from their CIAMTIS project "Multi-modal computer vision framework for improved hydraulic structural inspection. Graduate student Babatunde Atolagbe presented "A two-step framework for minimizing barriers to the use of decision support tools in transportation asset management" supported through the CIAMTIS graduate fellowship at UD. Fulbright scholar Jose Antonio Panero presented "Actions to Increase Capacity of Rail Lines." Jose's presentation was selected as one of the five best presentations at the day long symposium.Dr.
This is an exciting time of year. Please enjoy these pictures from the 2024 Doctoral Hooding on Wednesday, 5/22,
Congratulations to All!!!
Today, Dr. Jennie Saxe’s Processing, Recycling, and Management of Solid Waste (CIEG436) class presented a portion of their semester project: sustainable solid waste management options for the UD campus. As a bonus audience, Jeffrey Summerhays, UD’s Director of Sustainable Operations, attended today’s presentations to hear from our students.
From bin size and shape, to keeping litter out of stormwater collection systems, to food waste management options for campus, these students not just dug into the research, but also developed outreach tables and demos to engage a non-technical audience in their proposed solutions to real campus solid waste challenges.
Please join us in Congratulating Professor Rusty Lee for receiving the Jon Olson Faculty Senate Exemplary Service Award!!!
This award recognizes extraordinary leadership and service provided to the University of Delaware Faculty Senate and a Senator, Committee Member and Committee Chair for more than a decade.
Well deserved! Congratulations, Dr. Lee.
Yesterday was a dream come true, where we were able to see a project led by an undergraduate researcher, Kenneth "KJ" Olsen, who is now a master's student working with Prof. Monique Head. This construction project on The Green in front of DuPont Hall is the first of its kind to test out composite pavers and their response to various weather conditions. The concrete pavers consist of recycled materials that are engineered into a suitable construction material so that we are reducing the amount of sand, which is a dwindling resource.
There are more than 1000 lbs of recycled waste products in these pavers that would otherwise have been placed in landfills! This project was selected and partially funded by the University of Delaware Office of Sustainability (formerly Sustainability Council) as a 2022 Green Grant Award recipient.

Professors Monique Head (Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering) https://sites.udel.edu/head/ and Suresh Advani (Department of Mechanical Engineering and Center for Composite Materials) https://sites.udel.edu/advani/ have been advising KJ and supporting the project efforts.
Today was made possible by Gary Wenczel, Structures & Geotechnical Lab Supervisor, Jack Puleo (Dept. of Civil & Environmental Engineering Chair), who connected us to Steven Losin, P.E., Commercial Project Manager and his team from Interlock Paving, Inc. https://www.interlockpaving.com/ for installing the pavers with excellence! This is a work-in-progress, which will also include a sign and output from our sensors to compare the weather conditions within the pavers to the natural environment and more!
A UDaily article is forthcoming, so stay tuned!
On Monday, April 15th, Shaymaa Khudhair Obayes defended her dissertation: Vulnerability Assessment of Existing Bridges in the Pacific Northwest Region Under Long-duration Earthquake Effects.
Congratulations Dr. Khudhair Obayes!
We look forward to watching your career grow.
Please join us in congratulating Prof. Carolyn Voter on being selected for a UD Excellence in Teaching Award!
This award is a major University honor and it is even more remarkable that Carolyn earned it her second year at UD! On top of that, she teaches one of our most difficult undergraduate required courses, Fluid Mechanics. Clearly Carolyn is doing something(s) right!
Dr. Monique Head had the pleasure of witnessing a personal tour of the I95/SR 896 project with UD students (many from her graduate class on Highway Bridge Engineering (CIEG608)) courtesy of the CH-ATSSA Chapter 2024 April Project Tour & Meeting. They had a great and safe time on site. Students were able to network with engineers and traffic professionals who are devoted to keeping work zones safe and delivering high quality construction projects as this!
