In other words, you don't have to spend the recovery period hidden away or out of the spotlight. This patient is a perfect example of how to take control and grab your recovery by the horns.

During her two-week follow-up, my patient shared that just nine days after her procedure, she packed her things, jumped on a plane, and flew to Utah for a girls' trip.

Life doesn’t have to stop just because you had a facelift. I will openly state that going out in public and walking around with a recovering facelift takes serious confidence. However, if you can overcome that fear, getting out and living life will make your recovery that much better.

How so?

If you spend most of the recovery period out of the spotlight, avoiding social situations, time will feel like it’s passing more slowly. Instead, try to fill this period with as many fun and social activities as you can. Go out and have fun with friends, and spend time with loved ones. Our brains love distractions, and if you keep your mind busy during these months, time will fly by. Before you know it, you'll be in our office for your one-year follow-up, wondering where the time went.

Of course, it's important to adhere to the recovery protocol throughout your recovery, but that doesn’t mean your life and enjoyment of it have to come to a halt until you’re fully healed.

This doesn’t come natural to me either.

When I say this, I mean being on camera and posting to social media. It took years to build up the confidence to be on camera and another several years before I felt like I had truly gotten the hang of it. If you saw the number of bloopers we have, you might still question whether I have the hang of it or not.

This new standard of posting our lives online can be strange. Interactions and events that we used to keep private are now shared online for the world to see. As much as I love the connection and community that can come from social media, I understand why someone might prefer to keep their experience offline.

You might notice that the video only includes before and after pictures of her, with no interviews or talking heads like most of the stories I share here. That's because initially, she was hesitant about being on social media. It was only after she saw her healed results that she gave us the green light to share her pictures with you all. When she eventually called and permitted us to use her images online, I was thrilled because she has one of my and my staff's favorite transformations.

As much as social media has allowed me to grow, whenever you come to my office, you're in control of your experience and how you want your story to be shared, if at all.

The face ages in 3 layers: the Skin, subdermal fat, and the SMAS.

There are a variety of different treatments that can be used to rejuvenate the facial skin. Some of these include skin care, peels, lasers, microneedling, PRP, and sunscreen. Each of these options has its own set of benefits and drawbacks, so it is important to consult with a professional to determine which option is best for you.

Volume loss occurs when the underlying facial fat or bone structure begins to break down due to aging or other factors. As a result, individuals may appear gaunt in the face, which can make them look older than their years.

Treating facial volume loss with 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐬 and 𝐟𝐚𝐭 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 are both viable options. Fillers are injectable substances such as hyaluronic acid, collagen, or calcium hydroxyapatite that add volume and contour to the face. Fat grafting involves taking fat from another area of the body (e.g., hips or abdomen) and using it to restore facial volume.

𝐒𝐌𝐀𝐒 stands for Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System and refers to a layer of tissue found beneath the skin. During facelift surgery, the surgeon may lift this layer in order to improve the definition of the face and create a more youthful look. This layer provides structure, volume, and definition to the cheek, brow, and neck area.

SMAS can be lifted in a variety of ways, depending on the technique used by the surgeon. For example, the 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐭 addresses the SMAS layer first, lifting it away from the underlying ligamentous structures and reattaching it to create a smooth and natural looking result. The short-scar facelift, also known as the 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐭, also lifts the SMAS layer but does so through small incisions by placing few sutures to lift the SMAS. It has less longevity and quicker recovery. The 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐭 approach is the most common treatment, with the surgeon making incisions near the hairline, then lifting the SMAS layer by folding and suturing it upwards and repositioning it.
