Did you know that problems with your vagal tone can cause all sorts of tummy troubles? Yep, it's true! From bloating to tummy aches, there's a whole range of gastrointestinal issues that can pop up when your vagal tone gets out of whack.

For example, if your vagal function isn't working quite right, you might end up with bloating and sluggish digestion.

On the flip side, if your vagal activity is too high, you could find yourself running to the bathroom more often than usual.

And let's not forget about how vagal dysfunction can mess with your gut's immune system, leading to inflammation and an imbalance of bacteria.

So, it's important to keep that vagal tone in check for a happy and healthy gut. How? Try doing more things that calm you and help to create more happiness in your life. Whether that's spending more time in nature, with your furry baby, friends, family, reading a book, taking a nap, or having some quiet time to yourself.

Your hormones are intricately connected in a delicate system. Like an orchestra they work best when in balance with one another. Any imbalance (especially of cortisol or insulin) can disrupt the entire system. These two hormones directly impact all the others and need to be balanced first.

Each of our hormones has multiple functions in the body depending on the tissue and receptor. In the hierarchy, the stability of s*x hormones depends on the balance in the tiers below them.

Remember that you’re the conductor in this orchestra and that you can create whatever symphony your heart desires! It’s just about knowing which of your tiers needs support.

This is where hormone testing comes into play.
Both blood, saliva and urine help give us a wealth of information.

After their journey through your bloodstream, hormones head to the liver for breakdown & elimination, preventing hormonal imbalances. Cortisol and melatonin are key in regulating sleep patterns. Cortisol, the stress hormone, boosts energy in the morning, while melatonin promotes relaxation/sleep. Stress can elevate cortisol levels, straining the liver. If your liver isn’t functioning well, excess cortisol can disrupt sleep.

Stress can also drain your liver glycogen reserves, which are essential for producing stress hormones such as adrenaline. If you have a fatty, inflamed, or scarred liver, its ability to store glycogen is compromised.

Typically, during sleep, glycogen is released into the bloodstream to maintain stable blood sugar levels for several hours when you're not consuming food. However, people with liver conditions may experience a depletion of glycogen overnight, leading to a restless and unsatisfying sleep.

Many people w/liver issues are often insulin resistant. It’s best to avoid high-carb foods like sugar, refined foods & flours to prevent further liver damage. This in turn can help your liver make the appropriate sleep hormones you need while taking the load off of your liver.

Did you know that insulin, which is typically known for its importance in managing sugar levels, can also impact your thyroid function in a not-so-great way? When insulin levels are high, which can happen in conditions like insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes, it can mess with how your thyroid hormones are made and work.

Insulin can actually stop your body from turning one type of thyroid hormone (T4) into another (T3), which can make it seem like you don't have enough thyroid hormone at the cellular level even though your overall levels look okay.

This can make you feel tired, gain weight, and slow down your metabolism - all signs of an underactive thyroid. And if you already have insulin resistance, which is common in metabolic syndrome, it can make these effects even worse.

So, if you're juggling both metabolic and thyroid issues, it's important to understand how insulin and your thyroid are connected to keep your health in check.

The delicate balance of our digestive system relies heavily on our s*x hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone.

These hormones play a vital role in keeping our intestinal lining healthy. This lining, also known as the mucosa, acts as a protective barrier against harmful bacteria and toxins while aiding in nutrient absorption.

Estrogen, in particular, has been found to influence the production of mucus, which helps lubricate the intestines and ensures smooth food passage. It also regulates the growth and repair of the intestinal lining, contributing to its overall integrity.
Progesterone also plays a significant role in maintaining gut health by influencing the immune response and helping the gut protect itself from infections.

However, during menopause, the decline in estrogen and progesterone levels can have a significant impact on the intestinal lining.

As estrogen levels decrease, the production of mucus also decreases, making the intestines more vulnerable to irritation and inflammation. This weakened lining becomes more permeable, allowing harmful substances to leak into the bloodstream, potentially leading to inflammation and autoimmune disorders. This increased permeability, commonly known as 'leaky gut,' can contribute to digestive issues like bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Also, the reduced levels of progesterone can worsen these issues as it directly affects the gut's immune response. As a result, women going through menopause often experience increased digestive discomfort and changes in bowel habits.

This is why it’s crucial to understand the influence of s*x hormones on gut health in order to address the digestive issues associated with perimenopause and menopause.

By eating based on your genetics, managing stress levels, and balancing your hormones, it’s possible to minimize the impact of hormonal fluctuations on the intestinal lining and overall digestive wellbeing.

Let’s start healing your hormones and gut health now!

Have you ever wondered how stress can impact your organs? Here’s how:

Adrenal Glands: These glands produce cortisol and adrenaline. Prolonged stress can lead to adrenal fatigue, where the glands are overworked and struggle to produce enough hormones, resulting in fatigue and other health issues.

Skin: The skin can react to stress by breaking out in acne, rashes, or hives. Conditions like eczema and psoriasis can also flare up due to emotional stress.

Brain: The brain releases stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline during emotional distress. These hormones can affect cognitive functions, leading to difficulties in concentration, memory, and decision-making.

Gut: Stress can affect the digestive system, leading to issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, hemorrhoids and ulcers.

Liver: The liver is involved in metabolizing stress hormones. Chronic stress can overwork the liver, potentially leading to issues with detoxification and metabolism.

Lungs: Stress and anxiety can lead to rapid, shallow breathing or hyperventilation, which can cause shortness of breath and exacerbate respiratory conditions like asthma.

Kidneys: Stress affects blood pressure and the regulation of fluids and electrolytes, which can impact kidney function. Over time, this can contribute to kidney issues.

Heart: the broken heart syndrome reduces the ability of the heart to pump and it manitests as tightness or pain in the chest.

When it comes to what you eat and how often you eat it, variation and rotation is key!

I often recommending not eat the same foods every day. Wait at least one to three days before having the same food(s) again. The body requires many nutrients, all of which aren't found in any one food or type of food.

Also, eating the same food repeatedly can result in a sensitivity to that food. Vary protein foods, vegetables, and grains in the diet as often as possible.

Consuming more than one alcoholic beverage per day can increase the likelihood of experiencing PMS by approximately 80%.

This is due to alcohol's ability to elevate estrogen levels and impede liver function.

When we drink alcohol, our liver prioritizes metabolizing the alcohol, leaving less capacity to process estrogen.

This imbalance can result in estrogen dominance, worsening PMS symptoms such as cramps, breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, and heavy periods.

To minimize the risk of PMS and other hormonal issues, it is recommended to limit alcohol intake to 1-2 drinks 1-4 times per month and abstain from alcohol during the week leading up to your period.

By following these guidelines, you’ll notice a significant improvement in your PMS symptoms.
