Huntington: The Next Chapter 💙
It’s a great day in Newport News! Thanks to all who came out this morning to honor the proud history and celebrate the future of Huntington with us as we broke ground at the site of the new middle school and community resource area.
The event recognized the strong partnership between the City of Newport News, Newport News Public Schools and the community, and builds on the legacy of Huntington, which dates back to 1920. Speakers included Congressman Bobby Scott, Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones, and School Board Vice Chairman Dr. Terri Best, a Huntington alumnus, along with two current Huntington Middle School students. We were also joined by local and state elected officials and Huntington alumni and staff.
We are continuing to build brighter futures in the city! 💙
Welcome to Wednesday! Come join your Newport News Planning Commission today for the Newport News Planning Commission Meeting!

We are building and breaking through in Newport News! 👏🏫
The city and Newport News Public Schools will host a groundbreaking for Huntington Middle School tomorrow, Sept. 5, at 9 a.m. at 29th Street and Wickham Avenue.
The groundbreaking commemorates the next chapter of the proud history of Huntington High School and Huntington Middle School.
The original Huntington High School was the city’s first school for black students during the era of racial segregation. After desegregation, it became an integrated intermediate school (eighth and ninth grades), and in 1981 was converted to a middle school (sixth through eighth grades).
Construction of a new 600-student middle school will commence in the coming weeks with an anticipated completion in 2026. Plans for the site, known as the Southeast Community Resource Area, also include a state-of-the-art public library, community ce
nter, sports features, and a splash pad. Construction of the middle school is the priority.

What’s the purpose of a storm drain? ⛈
It’s essentially to collect stormwater runoff. The problem comes from all the “things” stormwater collects as it runs across the ground—including yards, streets and sidewalks—bringing all the dirt, trash, oil, grease, fertilizers and other pollutants it collects, carrying them down the storm drain and ultimately into our waterways.
It’s simple. What goes in the storm drains, comes out into the waterways.
So what can we do to keep our waterways healthy? Remember this…
💧Keep it clear. Keep it clean. Only rain down the storm drain.💧
