It is a Lyme Disease Awareness month. Many by now know that Lyme is spread by ticks and is a really hard to diagnose disease that is often missed by conventional medical establishment. You have to be treated by a specialist that is Lyme Literate to receive proper medical care.
What many people do not realize is that Lyme comes often with many co-infections, which have its own symptomology added to the clinical picture. This makes diagnosis so much more complicated and requires very specific tests. Basically, someone has to care enough and know what to test for.
Conventional treatment for all of these co-infections if caught early is a very long course of very strong antibiotics. However, for many people it does not take care of all the symptoms and yes, there is such thing as “long Lyme” or Post Lyme Autoimmune Syndrome. It requires ongoing treatment and supplimentation.
If you or someone you know experience symptoms that are not explained by “official” diagnostic work up - perhaps they should consider working with Lyme specialist. Like with many other auto-immune conditions, acupuncture and herbal medicine we practice are extremely effective, and with addition of supplementation protocols we can help reduce your symptoms and improve your quality of life.

OH BOY! Allergies are in a full swing!
Here are my usual tips for managing through the allergy season:
1. You start BEFORE the allergy season, in winter, or even in Fall, to prime your immune system. OK, is it too late for Spring - probably, but bloom and pollination is seasonal, so if you start now - you are just in time to manage through late spring, summer and fall (fall allergies are a thing too!)
With changes in climate - a lot of plants change their usual pollination cycle, so with exception of winter time - allergies are pretty much year round.
2. Priming immune system - you will need to find access to the local apiary and ask for local FRESH bee pollen. As you can imagine - as pollenation cycles adjust, so do the bees - they collect from different plants, so by always working with FRESH bee pollen - you continue helping your body adjust.
3. Start taking bee pollen with a tiny amount at the tip of the tea spoon, increasing gradually every 2-3 days up till you get to a full tea spoon. Take 1 tsp per day from then on every day.
4. Beware of the ”dew hour” - pollen count is the highest at dew hour in the morning and afternoon. Stay indoors at this time, if you can, or wear a mask outdoors. Limit your athletic activities at this time.
5. Do netti pot or saline flush each evening to flush out the pollen and reduce inflammation in your nasal passages.
6. Come in for acupuncture regularly - reduction in allergic rhinitis is one of very well supported by research acupuncture benefits.
7. Do not let your sinuses get too far inflamed because it does become secondary infection easily - we got herbs for that, do not wait too long to ask!

Happy International women’s Day! We are women owned and operated business!
Today we celebrate all women - the ones that came before us and fought for equality and the ones that continue fighting today. We honor mothers, sisters and daughters. We honor those who were born as women, and those who felt that they should have been born as women. We honor and grant respect and admiration to those who are fighting for their personal journey of becoming a woman. Being a woman means recognizing complexity of the world and we fight for the equal rights for EVERYONE.
Let’s stand tall and proud for justice, equality and PEACE, today more then ever. WE are not afraid of the darkness, because we are made of pure LIGHT.

So many of us are shallow breathers… Our lives are so hectic and stress-laden - we are all holding our breath without even realizing it. This week in clinic I found myself repeating it again and again to my patients - breathe... Often when stress affects the body - it is hard to expand the diaphragm enough to take a deep enough breath and you find yourself straining for that depth, instead of feeling relaxed.
Proper deep breath can stop or prevent onset of anxiety attack, helps you to compose and collect your thoughts, it slows down the rapid firing of your body’s responses. Sometimes the best response is NOT TO DO ANYTHING and just breathe… We all know it, but few (unfortunately) do it right. Often it is not taught properly too, or it is demonstrated as a special breathing technique. Truth is - we are supposed to breathe like this all the time, not just to “calm our nerves”. But you have to start somewhere.
Here is how I suggest to do this:
1. Sit comfortably, with your back straight, chin slightly lowered and feet firmly planted on the floor. Hands on your knees, palms up.
2. Close your eyes if it helps. Take a breath in through the nose, inflating your abdomen like a balloon. Exhale slowly, while pulling abdominal wall in gently. Repeat 3 times or until it feels more natural, more comfortable. Even if you stop here - it is already better.

3. Inhale (like in step2) and stop at the 80% of your breath. Pause and place your tongue on the rooftop of your mouth behind your teeth. Exhale slowly (like in step 2). Repeat several times.
4. Keep your tongue where it is now. Inhale - stop/hold - exhale as slow as you can through the mouth. Make sure your chest is moving only very slightly and your shoulders are relaxed, and all the movement is done by the abdominal wall. If you can expand your ribs at the top of your breath when you pause - add that to your breathing.

Practice makes it a habit, and habit becomes part of who you are. Breathe…

Ahhh this weather! We are looking at rain-ice-snow-cold all in one!
Best food for this weather - nice bowl of hot congee!

Let’s talk about congee - it is a staple of healthy diet in Asia, and it is so versatile and has so many flavors/styles - it is everywhere in some shape or form. RIght around the corner from us at “Spice club” they call it “rice soup” and serve it with a little bit of chicken and ginger. Very gentle and simple. But you can make it into anything you want - the main trick is cooking rice properly, and the rest (all the topings and flavorings) is a matter of taste.
Here is one of the recipes you can try:

1 cup of rice, 6 cups of water (I always add 1 cup of broth at the end of cooking)
• Combine rice and water, bring to boil, add salt, reduce heat and simmer till it is smooth and rice grains almost completely dissolved
• Add a cup of broth (can be vegetable broth), simmer for few more minutes
• Add crushed fresh ginger and if desired a pinch of Chinese 5 spice (can add a little soy sauce too)
• While congee is cooking, chop your toppings. It can be chives, onions, small bits of protein (popular in some parts of China), shavings of carrots, edamame, etc.
• Add in the last 5 minutes of cooking, stir gently in, simmer till fully warmed up
• You can add dry toppings for the crunch at the end, like a few peanuts, roasted shallots, etc.
• You can break an egg into it in the last minutes of cooking, or add a poached egg on top

Enjoy!

Happy Lunar New Year - Year of Water Tiger!

In this year we should all focus our positive energy to embody the change we want to see in this world and in our lives. Tiger is a powerful creature, assertive and strong. Water flows to bring good luck and good fortune. Those who stand strong, communicate clearly and project themselves without holding back should have a really good year.
This is absolutely the year to assert yourself and revel in who you are and who you want to be. Amazing time for those of you seeking personal transformation. Here is to all of you thriving in 2022!

As we are preparing for first big winter storm (let’s see if it actually arrives!) - don’t forget to stock up on some foods that can keep you warm - ginger, garlic, cinnamon, cumin - all these wonderful aromatic spices help open up nasal passages, clear phlegm and they are all nicely warming. Of course, peppers of all kinds are good if you want to kick it up a notch.
BTW, did you know that Chinese Hot and Sour soup is actually a cold remedy? Yep, it is! Proper hot and sour soup has some key ingredients - ginger, black bean paste, pepper and vinegar - that are essential to it’s main function - warming you up fast and making you break into a quick sweat. So if you are feeling achy, cold or starting to have mild shivers - quick, eat some hot and sour soup!
Not a bad idea to keep some on hand for this weekend.
(Lots of recipes out there, just make sure that all the key ingredient are included in the one you pick).

Have you noticed how dry the air is becoming as the temperatures drop? We certainly did! We see a lot of patients with dry eyes, dry cough, “dry congestion” in the clinic these days.
Here is a great remedy for these conditions:
Asian pair compote! It is delicious, can be used as desert and very good for restoring your lung health and moistening your airways. It is also very soothing for the scratchy throat.
2 pears (preferably Asian, but any juice pear works), 2-3 tsp of brown sugar or honey (in Asia they use rock sugar, it is better for blood glucose maintenance). 1 oz of Go Ji berries, 1 oz of tangerine zest or thin peels, couple of cinnamon sticks. Combine all of the ingredients and steam them together for 10 -15 min (till pears are translucent). Drink the delicious liquid and eat the pears. It is really a tasty desert and it is good for you! Try it out!
