Excited to see what other findings come from this!! So cool 🤓

First rocks recovered from Earth's mantle The 4,160-feet-long sediment core could help scientists learn about magma, volcanoes, and more.

Happy new school year! 📚🎉

Check out this cool resource from USGS:

Teachers – here’s a fun activity for your students!

Students can build their very own fossil, dinosaur, globe, and so much more! Our 3D paper models will help them learn about geologic concepts, how fossils are important in interpreting the Earth’s history, and how a stratovolcano is formed.

Guides and lessons can be found here

Another mind blowing piece coming to the Field Museum's already impressive fossil collection! 😮

NOW LANDING: the Field's newest fossil, a dino AND bird named Archaeopteryx. 🦖 🦅

Archaeopteryx is one of the rarest and most important fossils of all time: its tiny teeth, delicate feather impressions, and sharp claws are 150-million-year-old evidence that dinos evolved in the birds surrounding us today. 🪶

The Field’s Archaeopteryx is the 13th known-to-science specimen, and 1 of 2 on display in North America. 🤩

Learn more about our Jurassic bird, on display May 7. ➡️ https://fieldmuseum.io/Archaeopteryx

👏 Acquisition of the Chicago Archaeopteryx was made possible through the generosity of the Walter Family Foundation and a challenge grant from an anonymous donor.

Tourmaline & Lepidolite - Keke Pocket, Pederneira Mine, Brazil - 13.7cm - photographed for —
Now here is a wonder indeed! Finding an unrepaired matrix tourmaline from Brazil is exceedingly difficult. Finding an unrepaired tourmaline with fantastic aesthetics, next to impossible. Formerly in the collection of Daniel Trinchillo, I photographed this piece for Will Johnson before it found its home in a private collection. Featured as figure 219 in Flawless Beauty—

Here's to the first of the year! 🦕

For the first of the year, let me tell you that this is a very special year for dinosaurs.

Why, you ask? Because it is officially 200 years since the first dinosaur was formally described – Megalosaurus. It is also the 10-year anniversary of the publication of my first major book, ‘Dinosaurs of the British Isles’, co-authored with Prof. Nobumichi Tamura and published by Siri Scientific Press.

Megalosaurus was described in 1824 based on discoveries of various bones, including this epic dentary (lower jawbone) found deep underground inside a slate mine in Stonesfield, near Oxford, England. The discovery sparked a major scientific revolution.

In my opinion, the Megalosaurus jaw is the one dinosaur specimen to rule them all – you might call it dinosaur number 1. Or, the GOAT! 🦖

What a photo by Jeff Hollett (2023), who wrote "The many layered shale/slate cliffs at my hometown, Small Point-Adams Cove (Newfoundland, Canada). July, 2023. For scale, the individual layers are typically less than an inch thick up to two or three inches thick."

Bryozoans are one type of fossil we find pretty frequently on our field trips! If you're interested in learning more about them, check out this new article from the Geology publication:

In their new paper published in , Kai Xiang et al. write about "bizarre animals" in the Cambrian period (millions of years ago), noting, "The origin of Bryozoa has long been an intriguing mystery, largely due to the dearth of unambiguous bryozoan fossils within Cambrian strata. The Cambrian explosion witnessed the emergence of numerous problematic animals that are difficult to assign to extant phyla, indicating that the disparity of animal body plans during this period far exceeded that of the modern era. The prevalence of bizarre animals like cambroclaves, lacking modern analogues, implies a greater disparity of animal body plans during the Cambrian explosion than previously recognized. https://doi.org/10.1130/G51663.1
