Divers from NAFD were activated as part of the Bristol North Dive Team last night to the Norton Reservoir to search for a swimmer that did not resurface. The victim was located with the use of sonar from Environmental Police. Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the victim.

Today, D platoon performed the “Nine Tire Drill” during training. This drill consists of placing 9 tires (or in this case hoses) in a grid pattern. The members are blindfolded and go on air and they need to navigate it and retrieve various tools/objects placed around it. This reinforces air consumption practices and large area searching, including remaining oriented to where you are when searching large warehouses.

This drill was created after the tragedies in Salisbury, NC where two firefighters perished after becoming disoriented in a large mill building, and Charleston SC where 9 firefighters perished after becoming lost and disoriented in a rapidly deteriorating sofa warehouse fire.

Big training week for your North Attleboro Firefighters:

On Thursday, members of the dive team completed their yearly swim qualification at Wheaton College. Members of the team are from area departments including Franklin Firefighters Local 2637, Easton Firefighters Local 2790 IAFF, and Norton Fire Fighters Local 2678

Today, A Platoon trained on bailouts using their personal bailout kits. Our own members recently built a bailout prop, enabling us to remain sharp with our bailout skills in case we find ourselves in a bad situation.

Your D platoon firefighters responded to the chimney fire on Oakridge Ave. Great work containing the fire to the chimney with no extension to the residence. Oakridge Ave poses additional obstacles when it comes to firefighting tactics, particularly apparatus positioning. The road itself is only the width of a fire truck so communication is most important when assigning companies - in order to ensure valuable resources have access the scene.

RIP to the fallen firefighter, and our thoughts are with the others injured - we hope for a speedy recovery. The “odor of gas” call is a very common call we respond to, goes to show just how dangerous our profession can be and how quickly the environment can change on scene.

Home Explosion in Sterling Leaves One Firefighter Deceased, Fire Marshal’s Office Investigating

At approximately 7:38 p.m. on Friday, February 16, 2024, the Loudoun County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call reporting an odor of gas outside of a residence in the 300 block of Silver Ridge Drive in Sterling. Upon arrival, units from Sterling located a 500-gallon underground propane tank with a leak on the side of the residence and requested the Loudoun County’s Hazardous Materials Response Team, as well as additional units from Sterling, South Riding, numerous Command Staff and Safety Officers.

A short time later, units on scene reported a catastrophic explosion concurrent with multiple maydays from firefighters inside the residence. A Rapid Intervention Task Force and a second alarm were requested, bringing additional units from Fairfax County and the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority. Upon receiving the multiple maydays and calls for help, fire and rescue crews worked to locate, and rescue the trapped members from the debris that covered them. Ultimately, one firefighter was determined deceased on scene and 10 firefighters were transported to area hospitals for medical treatment of injuries sustained during the incident. Two civilians were transported to area hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal’s Office remains on scene and continues to investigate the origin and cause of the explosion. This is believed to be an isolated incident and there is no ongoing danger to the community. The fallen firefighter was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause and manner of death. Additional information regarding the investigation will be released as appropriate.

We appreciate the continued support of the community and our public safety partners during this incredibly difficult time. Please keep our Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System members, their friends, families, and all those involved in your thoughts.

The crew of E5 operated at this 2nd alarm today in Cumberland RI. Heavy fire and a compromised structure made the operation defensive. It was A-Platoons FF/EMT Sarah Ellis’ first fire, just recently graduating from the fire academy. Strong work by all 💪

A Platoon took advantage of today’s great weather to train with the air bags and lifting struts. These pieces of equipment are invaluable when it comes to stabilizing and lifting heavy loads. In this scenario they simulated a trapped person under a connex box.
