Ari put our fav drink into a cruffin. Ask for the ‘Thai Tea Bun’ next time you swing by ♡

A perfect balance of lightly spiced + sweet, the bun’s orange filling is made from mixing black tea with various spices (like cardamom, cinnamon & star anise), sweetener & milk. The outside is rolled in sugar & then topped with our whipped cream. 🔸🧡

We got 2 new milk buns for September!

Our Cereal-Milk Bun 🥣 received a makeover & we’ve welcomed it back with open arms—what do you think? Inspired by the simple flavor of the slightly sweet bowl of milk that’s left after munchin’ on some corn flakes. It’s the perfect lil’ breakfast pastry to start your morning for those with a sweet tooth (but not too sweet :p )

♡♡♡

Introducing the Honeydew Milk Bun 🍈
With how hot the days have been, it’s easy to appreciate the refreshing & bright notes of a sweet honeydew melon with this lil’ light green bun. Hope you get to try it soon ♡

Mooncakes are meant to be shared 🥮

The traditional dessert represents completeness like a full moon calling in unity among friends & family during the Mid-Autumn Festival.

We’re now offering our island-inspired mooncakes individually at the bakery! And our special edition mooncake boxes are still available for online ordering & for purchase in store.

Perfected by our baker Amity, the Seasonal Fruit Sando for this past month has been a celebration of various stone fruit slices (Mango, Nectarine, Peach or Apricot) nestled into a light cloud of osmanthus vanilla cream & hugged between two flaky croissant halves 🍑🥐🥭

Usually a weekend offering but sometimes here n’ there 😏

Fruit selection changes month-to-month ♡

Starting tomorrow—it’s the last week to get your hands on our Banana Milk Bun that was inspired by the nostalgia of the Korean Banana Flavored Milk we sipped on as kids 🍌💛

Staff Tip:✨Store the bun in the fridge for a couple hours and eat them cold for a yummy, cooling treat for a hot summer day.

Run, don’t walk- these beautiful ube, almond coconut bow ties are special for Father’s Day weekend only starting today! Filled with an almond, ube and coconut cream and the brainchild of several of the talented bakers on our team, Sammy, Joanne and Kevin! The best way we can describe this crispity crunchy pastry is that it’s a sideways croissant that exposes all the perfectly rolled butter layers. We tie it up in the center which gives it the cute bow tie look. It shatters all over the place once you bite in - even more so than our traditional croissants! Share with dad or not, we won’t tell.

2X Big Tech rising star turned into Gourmet Baker? 05/17/2024

I took some time yesterday to speak with an old friend, Tom Leung about my career and Bake Sum. What a trip down memory lane! We went from talking about getting my first job out of college at Google and then jumping over to Facebook a few years later and then quitting my job there to pursue my pastry career.

Here's an unedited and unscripted fun little conversation with Tom in case you've ever wanted to know a little bit more about me.

2X Big Tech rising star turned into Gourmet Baker? Joyce Tang was at early Google and joined Facebook when it was less than 1,000 employees and still a private company. Then she went to culinary school and st...

🍓🍓🍓 Strawberry season is finally upon us! With it, we bring you our newest pastry — the Strawberries and Cream Croissant (created by Amity!). We craft them using local Albion strawberries from with layers of lightly sweetened chantilly and vanilla bean pastry cream, all sandwiched inside our flaky and buttery classic croissant. The strawberries are perfection and grown hydroponically. You can just *taste* the care and attention they receive. We believe that they are best tasted simply and as fresh as possible.

To finish, we dust the croissants with powdered sugar and a strawberry drizzle. This pastry is encapsulates the flavor of spring in a croissant. Come visit in store to taste for yourself. We’re so excited for you all to try them! 🍓🍓🍓

One of our most popular pastries, ube milk buns, will continue to be on our menu through April! The signature purple ube cream that fills these buns have an earthy flavor that’s aromatic, mildly nutty and is complemented by coconut milk. Ube continues to be one of our favorite flavors to add to our pastries for its subtle flavor as well as its vibrant color. 😋

Our jasmine tea comes from our friends at . To get the real tea flavor in these whole leaf teas, jasmine flowers are layered in between the teas as they dry to impart a true jasmine scent. In the bakery, we steep the tea overnight before making our pastry creams to give you a really rich and fragrant flavor that we have all come to love in this beautiful blue bun.

You can find these Jasmine Milk Buns in our monthly Bake Sum box that you can pre-order at hotplate.com/bakesum (link in bio). Want to grab one or two? Order by walking in to our store on Grand Ave Mon & Thurs 8am-2pm and Fri-Sun 8am-3pm. We hope to see you soon!

Our green onion croissants are a mashup of the northern Chinese style pancakes, which are fluffy and leavened, and the southern Chinese pancakes that are crunchier, flatter, and layered with oil and salt. The Bake Sum GO croissant, as it is lovingly referred to in the store, is a stylish twist on green onion pancakes, we fold our croissants with loads of black and white sesame seeds and load them with fresh green onions, kadoya sesame oil, and maldon sea salt. For all the allium lovers out there 🫶🏽🧅.

We’re open Monday & Thursday 8am-2pm and Friday-Sunday 8am-3pm. Stop by for some delicious bites!

Pre-orders for the remainder of March are live at hotplate.com/bakesum (also linked in our bio). Walk-up ordering is always welcome during our open hours, pastries are available as they come out of the kitchen. 🍓+ 🍵 = a matcha made in heaven. You can now eat your strawberry matcha latte, in addition to drinking it!

This month’s featured croissant bun is filled with a deliciously rich matcha pastry cream (made with matcha) that has house-made strawberry jam folded into it. We roll the bun in matcha sugar and top it off with a dollop of toasted meringue and a light dusting of dried strawberry powder.

You can pop in to our store this month to try our Strawberry Matcha Bun or pre-order for Oakland pick-up at hotplate.com/bakesum (also linked in our bio)!

We are excited to bring you all some new, fun and fresh spring flavors. This menu has a ton of fan favorites that we hope you will love.

We’re kicking off March with a menu change. We’re bringing back the beloved Pandan Milk Buns, as well as the Jasmine Tea Milk Buns and Strawberry Matcha Buns. Our jasmine mochi bites and jasmine milk buns have jasmine tea steeped into each pastry, giving you floral and tea aromas and then finished with blue pea powder for visual interest. Thanks to our friends at for supplying us with the jasmine tea.

If you’re a big fan of teas who also happens to love delicious pastries, be sure to stop by this month!

Lunar New Year is always a special time of year for us at Bake Sum (and always a busy one too!).

We grew up celebrating this new year that not as many people would understand with all its customary colors, flavors and menus. The season is meant as both an opportunity to bring family and friends together and an opportunity for more healing, love and togetherness, which is more important now than ever before.

It’s also a time to let in more prosperity and set up all the good things that are to come in the Year of the Dragon for 2024. We look forward to celebrating with you.

🧨🧨🧨

Lunar New Year is special to us because of all fun symbolism that exists in our food. Here are a few ways our pastries represent good fortune for the New Year:

Pineapple Milk Bun: Symbolizing fortune coming to you, they’re filled with a pineapple cream scented with magrut lime and lime zest.
Black Sesame Kumquat Bun: Kumquats symbolize good fortune and good luck. We painstakingly cut these tiny fruits and transform them into a luscious kumquat marmalade. We swirl the jam in with a toasted black sesame creme patisserie.
Red Bean Milk Bun: Symbolizing love and fidelity, we cook the beans with aged orange peel (ours is aged from 2021!) and finished with a bit of orange zest.

Pre-orders are live at the link in our bio (:

We are absolutely OBSESSED with our new merch designed by the lovely and ridiculously talented . Our brand new reusable bags combine the classic look of a traditional Asian takeout bag with our take on the iconic co**ha bun.

Conchas are traditional Mexican sweet bread rolls that we also ❤️; we’ve taken our own spin on them by incorporating tons of unique Asian flavors with colorful co**ha tops and fillings in our milk bread buns. These pastries have been with us since the start of our journey and we love this iconography for Bake Sum.

These spacious and sturdy bags can be used to carry everything; they can fit two Bake Sum boxes at a time or a few items from our growing Asian retail selection (; Come by the store to snag one and have a new, cute, and reusable way to rep your favorite neighborhood bakery!

01/08/2024

Happy 2024 everyone! We heard you loud and clear and the pandan buns are officially back—that is until our Lunar New Year menu drops!

January pre-orders (for both Oakland and Berkeley pick-ups) are available now at the link in our bio.

Some folks may recognize our Berkeley location from pop ups past. We never left this location (because of how much pastry we make each week!) but finally have enough folks on the team to start selling many of our pastries again here. It’s a treat because it’s almost like a throwback to Bake Sum’s early days. For those that are in a rush or that struggle to find parking in Oakland, this is the better location for pick up. While we are trialing out to figure out what works, come say hi and see what we are mixing and working on for the day.

We’ve been working hard to make more cakes and tarts available as well. Our recommendation is to preorder ahead to guarantee yourself a cake, babka, select pastries, and our classic Bake Sum boxes, featuring our most popular items, for pick-up! We hope to see both new and old faces in the new year.

That’s a wrap on 2023, folks! 🎉

Words cannot express how grateful we are for all your support and encouragement. We are honored and humbled to serve up pastries that we hope bring bits of joy into your lives.

Hat tip to our amazing crew for showing up day in, day out—shoutout to Amity, Alvina, Ari, Bea, Celadon, Day, James, Joanne, Juan, Kai, Matt, Milan, and Sammy. It is truly an immense team effort.

Growth is challenging; we are always striving to build a bakery that aims to sustain our team, community, and customers. Thank you for sticking with us as we continue to learn and grow.

We cannot wait to do even bigger and better things in the new year and show you what we’ve been working on. Wishing you all a safe and wonderful year in 2024—cheers!

We will be closed New Year’s Day and are resuming normal hours on 1/4. We look forward to baking for everyone in the new year!

P.S. Black sesame babkas will be available through Lunar New Year 😉

The pastry is topped with golden dalgona bits that melt into a honey-like syrup with each bite, making it a delicious marriage of a flaky exterior and sweet, smooth center. Andrea’s Viet Mocha Cakes are in the house!

We introduced these lovely cakes back in September at the book signing we hosted for and her amazing cookbook inspired by traditional Vietnamese cooking (shoutout to !). We used Andrea’s recipe featured in her plant-based cookbook to make these cakes to serve at the event. Because of how much love they’ve received since then, we decided to continue to have them available in-store!

If you haven’t gotten the chance to try ‘em—this is your sign to stop by and pick some up! 😋

Happy Filipino American History Month!

This weekend we kicked off FAHM with Ari’s Sari Sari serving fresh shaved Halo Halo to celebrate the return of our Halo Halo Buns.

For those of you unfamiliar, Halo Halo is a Filipino shaved ice dessert. Literally translating to “mix mix”, halo halo contains a base of shaved ice, evaporated milk and whatever assortment of toppings desired.

In Ari’s halo halo, they enjoy jackfruit, red beans, green sugar palm fruit, cheese and corn ice cream, ube ice cream and nata de coco with a cube of leche flan and a fresh raspberry inspired by the halo halo former teammate Jay Foronda served them years ago when we first celebrated Filipino American History Month together.

As we welcome back the Halo Halo Bun, we’re reflecting on all the ways we as a team experience the “mix” of coming together and sharing. The mix of carrying our cultures, the nuance that history invites for us to continue re-imagining and building on those cultures. Naks!
