Last month, SMU’s Community Reads panel hosted a Lunch & Learn event with the authors of Oakland High School’s Cross Cultural Medicine Anthology (Volume 6)! 📚

Held at the Health Education Center in Oakland, this event brought together students from Oakland High’s Public Health Academy to discuss their health narratives and cultural insights.

This anthology, the product of a junior capstone project led by English teacher Jessica Forbes, compiles students’ personal health narratives, reflecting on health inequities, access, and cultural beliefs within the community.

We want to extend our gratitude to the Community Reads Committee—Tavi Baker, Allyson Emmarene, Marjorie Hammer, Sarah Koster, Vivie Nguyen, and Hai-Thom Sota—for their dedicated efforts in organizing this impactful event.

SMU’s Fit Feet group participated in the recent Special Olympics Healthy Athletes Fair on May 4th! 👣

The event, which embraced an exciting Star Wars theme, recognized Dr. Dutra with a well-deserved award for his remarkable contributions for serving as the Clinical Director for Healthy Athletes Fit Feet Program over five years.

The fair was a remarkable success, with over 200 athletes receiving screenings through the Healthy Athletes Program, reflecting community health and wellness! SMU’s Fit Feet group included Dr. Steve Hill and several podiatry students (Shayan Carduny, Gianny Honorat, and Theresa Nguyen) from the Class of 2025.

This significant day will occur at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland on Friday, May 24. Our ceremonies are thoughtfully scheduled to honor our diverse programs: the morning session at 9:30 AM will recognize graduates from the Master of Occupational Therapy, Doctor of Occupational Therapy, Doctor of Physical Therapy, and Doctor of Podiatric Medicine programs.

The afternoon session at 1:30 PM will celebrate our nursing graduates from the Doctor of Nursing Practice, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (including BSN, RN to BSN, and ABSN programs), and Master of Science in Nursing.

Each ceremony is a testament to our students' hard work, dedication, and perseverance. We hope to see you there! 💙
