It's Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day - Did you know: despite accounting for only 38% of the U.S. population, the South represented more than half of all new HIV diagnoses across the country in 2022.
Most of PWN's members are leading from their homes in the U.S. South. We caught up with Katryna Gholston from Alabama to talk about .
"Living with HIV in the South presents unique challenges, including limited access to healthcare, higher levels of stigma, and a lack of comprehensive education and resources. Uplifting the leadership of people living with HIV in the South is critical because we are the most informed advocates for what our communities need. Our lived experiences bring valuable perspectives to policy-making, healthcare practices, and advocacy efforts. Empowering our leadership ensures that the response to HIV is grounded in the realities of those most affected and helps build a more equitable system of care," said Katryna.
We also asked her, what's your favorite Southern food? Answer: Homemade mac and cheese!
