It was so much fun having artists from NIAD (Nurturing Independence Through Artistic Development) visit The Fourth Wall today. Many did sketches inspired by their friend Dorian Reid's sculptures which are currently on display. www.fourthwallart.com
Thank you Agustin Maes for the insightful review!
"Pablo Picasso once remarked, 'It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.' The Fourth Wall Gallery director Susan Aulik said as much while talking about her fellow artists in the gallery’s current show, Friends of Mine, which feature work by Dorian Reid, Latefa Noorzai, and Aulik herself." Only two Saturdays left; don't miss Nellie King Solomon's show, at The Fourth Wall, spanning 20 years of provocative work. These small pieces on mylar were created specifically for this show. With her mother, Barbara Stauffacher Solomon, in hospice at that time, Nellie made them "to connect my mother’s death with the heavens--depicting cars and airplanes as angels" www.fourthwallart.com
David Roth in his Squarecylinder review describes Nellie King Solomon's unique use of handmade tools--"The throughline connecting these activities is Solomon’s devotion to the old architectural adage, 'truth to materials.' In grad school at CCA during the late 1990s, she began mixing liquids and stamping them onto mylar with custom-made dowels that left finger- and thumbprint-shaped marks on the surface. She later added custom-made glass slabs with k***s attached, enabling her to spread pigment across large expanses."
Don't miss Nellie King Solomon at The Fourth Wall. Closes on May 25!

Nellie King Solomon works with self-invented tools which she uses to drag paint and various “non-art” substances (rust, silicon, soda ash, brass filings) across sheets of mylar. The results she describes as “toxic color fields, beautiful pictures of terrible things.” Don't miss her show at The Fourth Wall gallery. Ends May 25! www.fourthwallart.com
Sending condolences and love to our friend and current artist at The Fourth Wall, Nellie King Solomon, for the loss of her mother, Barbara Stauffacher Solomon. We are grateful that Nellie is carrying on the tradition of being a powerful and dynamic trail blazer in the arts. www.fourthwallart.com
Thank you, David Roth, for the extensive and beautifully written review of Nellie King Solomon's show at The Fourth Wall gallery.
This exhibition, which uses the gallery space next door as well, features large works on mylar from as early as graduate school at CCA to present day. A SF native, she moved to LA in 2019.
Although her work has been shown in LA, Berlin, and at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, King Solomon's last significant SF solo exhibition was at Brian Gross in 2010 and as Roth reports, "we've seen too little of it". The Fourth Wall is pleased to re-introduce her work to the Bay Area with this important exhibition. www.fourthwallart.com

“Solomon takes a critical yet playful eye to painting. Her art practice establishes rules, grids, and frameworks, only to challenge their very existence. King Solomon approaches painting with equal parts irreverence and admiration. King Solomon paints on the sharp industrial material of Mylar with custom wood, glass, and rubber tools pulling paint in sweeping gestural marks. The Mylar mounted to aluminum makes for a clean architectonic finish.” Jennifer McCabe SMoCA- Director & Chief Curator, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art
Nellie King Solomon’s “Oblivion Seekers” will open Saturday at The Fourth Wall with a reception on April 27. We are using the gallery next door as well to show this impressive survey of recent and archived works. Stay tuned! www.fourthwallart.com
