Wishing you and your herd a Happpy Thanksgiving!

11/23/2023

Happy Thanksgiving!! We love you all and weโ€™re here for you! But here are ways to not have to have us disturb your lovely day with the family!! โค๏ธ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿฝโค๏ธ

As we enter Thanksgiving week in the US, many of your vets will be out of town or spending much needed time with their families.
Itโ€™s times like these that horse owners need to practice ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐œ๐š๐ซ๐ž๐ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐ .

During this holiday time, as an emergency only vet, I recommend the following:

- ๐ƒ๐จ๐งโ€™๐ญ deworm your horse right now.
- ๐ƒ๐จ๐งโ€™๐ญ start a new feed right now.
- ๐ƒ๐จ๐งโ€™๐ญ get a new round bale of coastal hay right now if youโ€™ve let the last one go to dust (give small amounts at a time or mix with a stemmy hay until theyโ€™ve had their fill, then give the round bale).
- ๐ƒ๐จ๐งโ€™๐ญ change schedules.
- ๐ƒ๐จ๐งโ€™๐ญ vaccinate your horse right now, especially if you have a known reactor.
- ๐ƒ๐จ๐งโ€™๐ญ be in a rush and fail to soak your feed for long enough (choke risk) - especially if youโ€™re late to feed due to holiday errands/get togethers.
- If you have visitors, limit treats. Ensure gates are closed. Make sure feed doors and bins locked. ๐๐ž ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ฅ!

There is already a shortage of equine vets - and the few we do have will likely be out of town or trying to enjoy the holiday.

Letโ€™s all have a very ๐‡๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ฒ ๐“๐ก๐š๐ง๐ค๐ฌ๐ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐ . And letโ€™s let our vets stay home with family!

We sure are lovely the crisp fall weather! It's great reminder that the busy winter season is almost here and it's the perfect opportunity to set your horses up for success by boosting their vaccines and having a veterinarian perform an oral exam and dental floating!

In Florida, vaccines for Eastern & Western Equine Encephalitis (EEE & WEE), West Nile Virus are recommended twice annually, as well as Tetanus and Rabies vaccines. For those horses traveling, showing or interacting with new horses Influenza and Rhinopneumonitis (EHV 1 & 4) are also recommended bi-annually.

Recently an undervaccinated horse in Levy County contracted EEE, which is carried by mosquitoes, and as is often the case did not survive. Biannual vaccination safe and effective at preventing disease!

Answer! The radiograph show a broken mandibular incisor ( #403) that was then surgically extracted and can be seen in the next image. The horse is feeling much better without this in her mouth!

Incisor pain can also be caused by Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis (EOTRH) which is a newly recognized dental disease in horses that affects incisors and canine and is very painful. You can learn more about EOTRH here:
https://www.vet.cornell.edu/hospitals/equine-hospital/dentistry-and-oral-surgery/common-dental-procedures-and-pathology
or here:

Just few more reasons why is it important to have a veterinarian perform an oral exam annually!

RABIES was recently confirmed in a horse in MARION COUNTY.

While Rabies is infrequently encountered in horses it is always fatal and represents a serious public health risk to humans. Annual rabies vaccines are recommended for all horses and should be administered by your veterinarian. We have rabies in the wild animal population in Marion county year round and keeping all your animals up to date on their rabies vaccines EVERY year can save their lives and save yours.

Itโ€™s getting hot out there! The fastest way to cool your horse is continuous application of cool tap water! When the water running off their body is cool is a really quick and easy way to tell if youโ€™ve effectively cooled them off.

A recent study, conducted in Japan, compared various methods for cooling horses after exercise in hot and humid conditions. Thoroughbreds were exercised until their pulmonary artery temperature reached 108ยฐF. The time until the pulmonary artery temperature returned to

With the Fourth of July festivities just around the corner, now is a good time to make preparations to keep your horses, farm animals and pets safe during any fireworks that will be happening in your area.

The graphic below lists some tips to get you started. If your horses are staying out overnight, be sure to check your fencing ahead of time and neutralize any hazards like rocks, branches or holes that could lead to injury if the animals start bolting. If you are concerned your animals may get loose, make sure your contact information is on a tag on the halter (provided iโ€™is a breakaway one) or braided in their mane.
Some horses require sedation to help them get through. If you are really worried about your horse's safety, consult your veterinarian about calming agents.

This is also a good time to update and review your fire response program at your barn. Make sure you have the number for the fire department, everyone knows the address of the barn, plenty of fire extinguishers are available, and any fire hazards are removed from the barn.

No matter what your Independence Day plans are, above all please remember to practice safety and be considerate of the people and the animals living around you so EVERYONE may have an enjoyable celebration.

Happy 4th! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Always a good reminder for this time of the year: The notion that a hot, recently exercised horse needs to cool down before drinking water is a myth, so be advised that it is best to rehydrate sweaty, hardworking horses without delay.

The key, however, is to know how much water to allow at one time. Because of the equine stomachโ€™s relatively small capacity, offer small amounts of water every 20 minutes until the horse drinks his fill rather than letting the animal drink it all at once. A slower reintroduction of water is good common sense, while it makes no sense to hold horses off it.

Remember that water is the most vital nutrient for a horse. The average idle 1,100-pound horse in a cool environment will drink 6 to 10 gallons of water per day, but that amount may easily double or triple in a hot environment! Therefore, it goes without saying that providing cool, clean water to your horses at ALL times is of paramount importance.

Great checklist! Except the mud oneโ€ฆ Dr Proctor-Brownโ€™s favorite thing is no more mud season!!!

Message us to get your horses scheduled for their fall dentals!! Start your season off right!

Ready or not, fall is right around the corner! As a horse owner, the best part about this time of the year is knowing we won't have to deal with as many insect-related issues. However, now is also the time to start thinking about housing, nutrition and preventative health strategies suitable for the arrival of winter.

Your equine veterinarian is one of your greatest allies this season: be sure to give them a call soon to discuss vaccination and deworming protocols appropriate for your horseโ€™s situation; use this opportunity to chat about recommended changes in nutrition and exercise program as well!
