Thank you Boehringer Ingelheim for sponsoring our last equine lecture for the winter season and Dr. Sarah Reuss provided a great overview of Equine Asthma.
Thank you everyone who attended. Hope to see you again next year.

IRAP is a biological product that contains concentrated amounts of anti-inflammatory protein. Blood is collected from your horse and incubated in a special syringe overnight. The IRAP portion is then processed and injected into a joint to aid in the treatment of joint disease. If you have further questions or wish to inquire about using this product for your horse, please give us a call.
Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) involves passing a specialized tube to the smallest airways and alveoli (tiny lung sacs where oxygen is exchanged) and instilling sterile saline that is sucked back out. The returned fluis is submitted for cytology, giving us a picture of what is happening in the lower airways.
In jumping horses, the highest forces can be expected in the trailing limb during landing. Research has shown that the relative loading of the tendons was very high in superficial digital flexor (SDF). A 600 kg horse jumping a 1.2 meter height will exert approximately 13.9 kN, or 3,124 lbs, on landing.
The cornea, or the windshield, of the eye can become cloudy for a number of different reasons. Immune-mediated keratitis (IMMK), wherein the immune system launches an attack on the eye, is becoming increasingly recognized in the horse. There are several forms and some require very different treatment strategies. If you horse has a newly cloudy eye without an obvious reason, even if he does not appear overtly painful, consider having his eyes evaluated to rule out this condition.

Platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) can be used for the treatment of inflammation and osteoarthritis in joints, tendon sheaths, and bursae. It is also very useful for treating soft tissue injuries in tendon and ligaments. When activated, platelets release a large number of growth factors and other factors that stimulate tissue repair, leading to faster and improved healing and helping get our equine and canine athletes back to competition!
