📣 November Athlete of the Month: Kayla Keen! 🎉

Kayla’s dedication to her fitness journey is nothing short of inspiring. Not only does she show up to class consistently, but she also crushes her lifts—setting new personal records just about every time she steps up to the bar! 💪
Her hard work, determination, and positive energy make her an incredible part of our CrossFit Pinnacle community.

⁉️We asked Kayla to answer a few questions for us and here is what she had to say...⬇️
1. What inspired you to start CrossFit, and how has it changed your approach to fitness?
•In 2016 I was introduced to CrossFit. I don’t think I was inspired until after watching the CrossFit games in 2018. From playing sports in high school to being in the military, CrossFit hasn’t necessarily changed my approach to fitness. It has mostly kept my body from falling apart. If I stop working out I hurt. My body needs the exhaustion in order to remain glued together.
2. Can you share your proudest achievement since joining CrossFit Pinnacle?
•My proudest achievement since joining CrossFit Pinnacle is the consistency. I was very up and down when I first started. Since being at Pinnacle, I have been going at least 4 days a week for a year and a half.
3. What's your favorite WOD (Workout of the Day), and why?
• I don’t have a favorite workout. I actually dislike all of them equally (in a good way). I know that no matter how much I like it or hate it, it’s going to take everything out of me to keep from reaching complete muscle failure or puking. But if I had to actually choose, I guess I’d say anything with wall balls.
4. How do you stay motivated on days when you're not feeling 100%?
•I tell myself, if I don’t go today and something happens tomorrow, that’ll be two days missed. It’s just not worth playing catch up with my body later on.
5. What's one piece of advice you would give to someone just starting their CrossFit journey?
•One piece of advice I’d give someone is to trust the process, embrace the suck, and keep moving even when it hurts the most because the moment you give up on yourself is when it hurts the most.
6. What's one fun fact about you that most people don't know?
•I can only write using certain pens/pencils. Part of my autism.

⁉️We asked Sebastian to answer a few questions for us and here is what he had to say…⬇️
1. How many years have you been a member at CrossFit Pinnacle?
•I have been a member at Crossfit Pinnacle for 1 year and 2 months
2. What class time do you most often attend?
•I started going to the 6am class thinking I would be going 3-4 times a week, but I took Coach Dave's advice and commited to coming 5 days a week. I still go mainly at 6am, but some Fridays I might go in at 4:30pm
3. What is your favorite event(s) at CrossFit Pinnacle?
•I have honestly enjoyed the entire journey and every event. My First Event was Thankgiving and my family loved it. I have also had the privilege to do a few local lifting competitions Bear the Burden and Festivis. I also really enjoyed Murph. I think all together this is a great community.
4. What do you do for a living?
•I am a Medical Device Rep for the last 4 years and a Health Insurance Broker on the side.
5. What is your favorite food, color, and animal?
•Food is hard to pinpoint I love everything, but Mexican food always ok with me, favorite color is blue, and my favorite animal is a Dragon.
6. What is your favorite activity/hobby outside of CrossFit?
•Lately Crossfit has been my favorite new hobby, but I also like Tennis and Fishing.
7. Why did you decide to join CrossFit?
•In 2022 I had a hard work year and I had completely put aside doing any physical activities. In early 2023, I did manage to get a better work schedule and started playing tennis again, but I was very out of shape and did not feel good with my energy or weight. I was the heaviest I had ever been and also the most out of shape I had ever been. After my birthday in May I told my self that I needed to make a change, luckly the gym is only 5 minutes from my house. It still took me over a month to finally make the commitment to call and come in for a class.
8. What have you accomplished in CrossFit that at the start you thought you would never be able to do?
•Oddly enough I cannot believe any of my accomplishments. All my lifts: Bench, Squat, Jerk, Deadlift, Clean, and Sn**ch are the heaviest ever. I thought it was going to take me much longer to gain the strenght I used to have back in high school, but it happened within the first 6 months. I did not think I could do double unders, hand stand push ups, or chest to bar. I sometimes can't belive it has just been a little over a year.
9. How has CrossFit helped you in your personal life?
•Crossfit has given me a space to take care of myself physically and mentally, and awesome community, and mentality that I can do hard things. I have a daughter with a unique ability, and it has given my family motivation for seeing what crossfit is doing with adaptive divisions. Crossfit is no longer a workout but a lifestyle.
10. What are your CrossFit goals for this year?
•By the end of this year I have some Lift Goals for my Front Squat, Clean & Jerk, Deadlift and Sn**ch that I am very close to hitting. I will also really like to get a Muscle Up before the year ends. I also plan to get a better score in the open in March.
11. What keeps you motivated during a WOD?
•I have always been competative and having Wodify helps me see people sign into class. That has truly helped me keep my commitment to 5 days a week. I also see my progress in excersises and lifts and keeps me motivated to see progress. What I really like is that everyday is different and many of the workout are under 30 minutes. As hard as they are, it is temporary and you got your workout in for the day. Coach Dave is also very helpful and has always encouraged me as well as other 6am crew especially Austin my workout partner.
12. Any advice for beginners?
•The best advice for anyone that is just starting out would be the same advice that Coach Dave gave me. Just show up 3-5 days a week and commit. I am not a morning person, but somehow getting up an hour earlier everyday is the only time I found I can come 5 days a week. You can modify the workouts as you start. There are going to be days that are hard to even get out of bed, but just show up. It helps having someone you workout with, naturally that happens when you show up, and somehow you will be surprised what you can do and after 3 months of progress it becomes habit. Also, focus on good form and don't skip some scaling options especially if they are difficult. Good form will prevent any unessesary injuries and will develop better lifts over time.
