Today, we honor and celebrate the freedom, resilience, and contributions of African Americans throughout history. Juneteenth is a day to reflect on the progress we’ve made and recognize the work that still lies ahead in the journey toward equality and justice for all.

✈️ DC Day 1️⃣

Yesterday we spent our morning networking with community members and leaders from the Permian Basin as well as on the national level. Our Midland and Odessa Chambers programmed several great speakers and panels related to topics such as energy, immigration, workforce and other important issues.

Our afternoon was spent meeting one-on-one with Congressman August Pfluger where our students were able to discuss issues most important to them such as their education. We ended our morning at the Capitol with a guided tour.

We started our evening by presented by Diamondback Energy and hosted by Mike Sommers of The American Petroleum Institute. It was fantastic for our SLI team to visit with Mike again following his keynote address at the 2023 Permian Basin Water In Energy Conference.

We capped our evening off with a guided night tour of the National Mall! We are ready for day two!

This Distinguished Lecture was unique in that it was a featured event, highlighting Chabon's novel 'The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay.'

We are excited to have Monica on our team, and are confident she will be instrumental in the growth and direction of the Shepperd Leadership Institute.

Please join UTPB in welcoming Monica Tschauner to the Falcon family! Monica will serve as the new Executive Director for the Shepperd Leadership Institute.

"Monica brings to SLI a passion for leadership, serving the community, and a love for West Texas. She will no doubt grow the Institute's programs to the community and help connect the resources of the Institute to other organizations, schools, and non-profits," said Senior Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, Dr. Becky Spurlock.

The Shepperd Leadership Institute is committed to serving UTPB students, faculty, staff, and our community. The Institute hosts established programming like the Distinguished Lecture Series and leadership training and founded the Permian Basin Water In Energy Conference. They recently embarked on a partnership with the Ellen Noel Art Museum to reimagine and reanimate the Presidential Archives.

Most memorable moment #9: Distinguished Lecture Series speakers

In 2023, the Shepperd Leadership Institute at UTPB re-vamped the Distinguished Lecture Series, which brings popular speakers to West Texas! The Distinguished Lectures are open to the public and free of charge, thanks to generous Shepperd Inner Circle donors.

In March, former NASA astronaut, a recurring character on the Big Bang Theory, and New York Times Best-Selling author, Mike Massimino spoke about teamwork, innovation, and leadership as a down-to-earth spaceman.

In September, we welcomed Richard Montañez, the visionary behind Flamin' Hot Cheetos and former PepsiCo executive. Montañez delivered an inspirational keynote address at the Distinguished Lecture Series held at the Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center. Speaking to an audience of over 600 attendees, Montañez delved deep into his personal journey, underscoring the theme, "One Revelation Will Lead to a Revolution."

This is a testament to the authentic work of our UTPB College of Engineering faculty and students! Check out this exciting news.

UTPB's Petroleum Engineering Program was ranked eighth worldwide and sixth nationwide based on undergraduate enrollment!

According to an article published in the Journal of Petroleum Technology, the program was ranked ahead of Louisiana State University and The University of Oklahoma.
