Read Howard Gatewood's story below - Written by Alexandra Macia

Newly named Venus ISD Assistant Superintendent, Howard Gatewood credits UTPB’S Superintendent Certification Program for his success in education administration. From Rochester, New York Gatewood completed 22 years of service in the Marines. He believes his time in the Marines instilled in him a deep sense of duty and commitment.
“Upon retirement, I chose to enter the field of education, driven by the belief that an educated society guarantees our freedom as a country. It provides an educated military that can think critically on the battlefield, a crucial aspect of our national security,” said Gatewood.
A mentor recommended the UTPB Superintendent Certification program to him, due to its reputation of preparing educators with the knowledge of school finance, facility planning, employee management, and human resources management.
The program combines online learning with meetings and discussions, offering a practicum experience. Students apply classroom theory to the school setting and gain hands on experience and real-world skills.
“UTPB prepared me to pass the superintendent certification test and allowed me to interact with and learn from knowledgeable practitioners in the education field,” said Gatewood.
Gatewood believes the program was a transformative experience, connecting him with peers, mentors, and leaders who knew the educational systems from a global perspective. He also says the blended format of online meetings and live feedback was instrumental in his success in finishing the program.
“The course on school finance equipped me with the skills to effectively manage our district's budget, while the facility planning module helped me oversee the planned construction of a new school building,” said Gatewood.
Gatewood describes his time at Venus ISD as immensely fulfilling.
“As a campus principal, I made about 100 small decisions daily that only impacted my campus. Now, as an assistant superintendent, I make about three big decisions daily that have a profound impact on every campus,” said Gatewood.

We are excited to share a story about one of our graduate students here at UTPB - The University of Texas Permian Basin!
Please see Sarai Badillo's spotlight below - Story Written by Alexandra Macia
---
UTPB graduate Sarai Badillo has been awarded a highly competitive NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and will be attending a PhD program at the University of Oklahoma.
A part of the HSI-STEM program at UTPB, Badillo graduated with a bachelor's of science in biology and a minor in psychology.
“Participating in the HSI STEM Research program was a rewarding experience. Collaborating with Dr. Hembry and Dr. Sparks as an undergraduate provided me with invaluable research exposure and financial support,” said Badillo.
Her current research focuses on the microbiome variation within and among species of leaf flower moths. At the University of Oklahoma, she will focus on microbiology and immunology.
Badillo says she cherishes the people at UTPB the most, and the unwavering support they have offered along the way. At the previous institution Badillo attended, she faced academic suspension due to low grades. She says she never imagined completing her degree, let alone receiving the fellowship opportunity.
“Thanks to mentors like Dr. Hembry and Dr. Oldham, who believed in me, I'm embarking on a fully-funded PhD program at my dream school. To all mentors: your guidance is invaluable, and to fellow students: perseverance pays off—never lose hope!” said Badillo.

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Jeffrey Washburn, Assistant Professor in the History Program at UT Permian Basin, for receiving the prestigious Inscoe Award! 🏆 This esteemed award, established in 2018 by the Georgia Historical Society, honors the article published in the Georgia Historical Quarterly in the previous year. Dr. Washburn's work shines a spotlight on the significant role of Native Americans in early American history.
Dr. Washburn shared his thoughts on this remarkable achievement: "It's an honor to be selected by the Georgia Historical Society and by the selection committee for the award." He hopes his book highlights "the importance and centrality of Native Americans to early American history. For the United States, relations with Indigenous communities were not only significant from a local or national perspective, but how they were viewed by other nations."
Join us in celebrating Dr. Washburn's outstanding contribution to historical scholarship!
