Chapman Fire and Life Safety along with Facilities Management presented Luis "Bear" Romero with a certificate of appreciation and luncheon with some of his co-workers for his quick reaction to an early stage catering fire accident. His quick thinking during a fire emergency is an important reminder that we must never leave any fire unattended and prepare for fire emergencies with proper fire extinguisher training. Check our Training Scheduler for our Fall Semester courses coming in early September.

We are expecting flood warnings this week with our weather forecast (3-6 inches) that includes a week worth of rain. Preparing your home with sandbags to divert areas susceptible to damaging your property will be important. While this seems simple, there are important things to keep in mind when filling and building with sandbags. Tips: Fill sandbags to 2/3 full and tie, ensure ground is level before building your levee, use tarps near doorways or garages, build your base 3 times wider than your height, and most importantly… leave to higher ground if you find yourself in flood conditions that become dangerous. Drive safe and please slow down.

Did you know that the vast majority of house fires (92%) involve clothes dryers? The leading items first ignited in dryer fires were dust, fiber or lint. A dryer vent, typically located behind your dryer, should be cleaned annually to avoid these potential fire hazards. It can simply require you to disconnect the dryer vent hose secured by a clamp and remove built up dust and lint. If you find additional lint beyond that point, you can vacuum it out or purchase a brush cleaning kit ($20-$40). If you find a screen sometimes left in your vent, it should be removed due to this screen meant for bathroom vents. A smoke detector should also be installed since washers and dryers have other parts that may fail and cause a fire such as a drive belt.

Lithium-ion batteries are known to spontaneously ignite and pose fire hazards due to overheating from poor battery design, damage to the battery through a drop strike, electrical shorting, overcharging, rapid discharge, or increased storage temperatures. Lithium-ion batteries contain lithium metal, which is highly combustible. Did you know bicycles are not allowed to be parked or stored in any campus building? Especially in campus housing rooms.
