We Provide A Wealth Of Support And Resources
The PADRE Foundation stands for Pediatric-Adolescent Diabetes Research and Education and was started in 1985, by a man named John Haretakis. John had a spark of an idea after his daughter, Nikolina, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. That idea grew into what PADRE is today: a galaxy of FREE diabetes education classes, family support groups and youth social events. And, weāre currently the only diabetes camp on Catalina Island, giving children and teens a sense of normalcy. Itās a milestone we couldnāt have reached without the help and support of our volunteer board of directors, valued donors, and families.
Type 1 diabetes strikes both children and young adults at any age. It comes suddenly, causes dependence on injected or pump insulin for life, and carries the constant threat of divesting complications. Today, Type 1 diabetes continues to take lives, with nearly 40,000 people being diagnosed each year in the United States. PADRE continues to have a stronger hand in partnering in research for better treatments and ultimately finding a cure for Type 1 diabetes. As a nonprofit organization, we remain committed to meeting the needs of children living with diabetes and their families.
We will continue to provide a wealth of resources and education through the free classes we offer, as well as our programs and events for children and teens. And we will stand together in the fight for a cure for Type 1 diabetes.
