🍎✏️Can you believe it's back-to-school time already? If your kids are walking to school, let's chat about some tips to keep them safe.

Remember to always look left, right, and left again before crossing the street, and keep looking until they’re safely on the other side. Also, let's put our phones, headphones, and devices down while crossing the street - safety first! Whenever possible, use sidewalks or paths and cross at street corners using traffic signals and crosswalks. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as you can. If kids are younger than 10, it's best for them to cross the street with an adult if possible. Let's have a great school year!

Focus on the Road📵🚗 School is back, our roads are busier with students, buses, and parents. It's more important than ever to stay focused behind the wheel. Distracted driving can have serious consequences, especially in school zones.

🔹 KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD: Stay alert for pedestrians and cyclists.
🔹 DON’T REACH FOR ITEMS WHILE DRIVING: Make all adjustments before driving.
🔹 KEEP CALM: Anger, frustration, or road rage are examples of distracted driving as can impair judgment.

Let's commit to distraction-free driving to ensure our children and community stay safe. Your attention could save a life! 🚸🚌👫

We encourage parents of e-bike riders to familiarize yourselves with the class of your child’s e-bike. Knowing the class of your e-bike will tell you where and how you can ride.

🚴‍♂️ E-bikes are subject to similar rules as regular bicycles such as:
1️⃣ Always travel in the same direction as traffic.
2️⃣ Follow requirements for slow-moving vehicles.
3️⃣ If there’s a bike lane, use it, unless you are making a left turn, passing, or approaching a place where a right turn is allowed.
4️⃣ You may not ride on the sidewalk with a willful disregard for safety. If you must ride on sidewalks, do so at a walking
5️⃣ pace and yield the right-of-way to pedestrians.

✅ Helmets are required for those under 18.
✅ Helmets are required for all ages on Class 3 E-Bikes.
🚳 Riders under 16 cannot ride Class 3 E-Bikes.

Riding safely is not only for their own well-being but also for the safety of others sharing the road! Let’s ride responsibly, Anaheim! 🚴‍♀️

• Back to school social media campaign
• Lesson plans for those first days back
• Incorporate modules or presentations into the parking permit process or into back to school nights
• Students can lead fun lunch time/game time activities using our student leader guide
• School wide pledge drive

Summer is the perfect time to get fresh air on your bicycle! But biking can also result in injuries. Young adults have the highest rate of bike-related emergency department visits. So it’s important to be safe. Before riding, make sure you’re wearing a helmet, and keep an eye out for vehicles. https://bit.ly/3SwSbCV

Many parents think that Water Wings, Puddle Jumpers, or Inner Tubes are a safe way to keep their child safe from drowning. However, these devices can give a parent a false sense of "security" that a child has extra protection in the water. Unfortunately, these devices can cause children to gain a false sense of security in and around water. That security teaches them that they are safe, they can swim just like "the big kids", and gives them false confidence around water. The only safe device in and around the water is a Coast Guard Approved floatation device such as a proper size and fit life jacket.

There’s nothing like a day at the playground. Here are some tips to keep kids safe:

Keep toddlers under age 5 in a separate play area, away from equipment designed for bigger kids.
Remove hoods, drawstrings and other items that could cause strangulation.
Make sure kids stay hydrated by taking water breaks every 15–20 minutes.

Most children will outgrow their infant seats by height long before they reach the weight limit. If the top of a child’s head is within one inch of the top of the shell of the seat, it’s time to transition.

We remain committed to addressing community concerns about bike safety. Yesterday, we conducted a High-Visibility Enforcement (HVE) operation at the Great Park sports fields and in Woodbury. Most of the bike and e-bike riders we saw were riding safely and courteously to others. Three Surron riders arrived, saw our officers at the park, and quickly departed.

Our community's safety is a top priority, and we will continue to address bike safety through education and enforcement.

Our Huntington Beach Marine Safety Division has been awarded a significant grant of $141,837 from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission through the Pool Safety Grant Program. These funds are earmarked for education, training, & enforcement initiatives, underscoring the gravity of the City’s commitment to strengthening pool safety requirements. The City of Huntington Beach aims to save lives and prevent serious injuries.

The grant will be utilized to provide free swim lessons for underserved communities in Huntington Beach. We explicitly target youth participating in the Beach Ranger program during the summer. The City has partnered with the Community & Library Services to provide the swim lessons.

Electric bicycles are becoming increasingly popular due to their efficiency and convenience. However, it's crucial to use e-bikes safely, responsibly, and in accordance with city and state laws.

When riding an e-bike, you must:
• Ride with the flow of traffic.
• Stop at red lights and stop signs.
• Yield to pedestrians.
• Riders must be at least 16 to operate a Class 3 e-bike, and all Class 3 riders must wear helmets. All riders under 18 must wear a helmet on any type of bike, motorized or not.
• Use hand signals when turning or stopping.

Do not:
• Use a cell phone while riding.
• Use headphones or earbuds in both ears.
• Carry more passengers than the bike is designed for.
• Operate a bike without the required lights and reflectors.
• Ride while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
