We're celebrating our 150 year anniversary! On November 3, 1874, Oregon City School District officially became a district and on Saturday, October 5, 2024 we will be celebrating this huge milestone with tours of our buildings and a grand celebration at OCSLA's new home, Eastham.
Please note that this is a change of time and venue from our previous announcements. This decision was made in an effort to be more accessible but to also show off OCSLA's new home!
We will be providing building tours at all of our schools from 11 am - 1 pm. From 1 pm - 3 pm we will be having a grand celebration of our 150 years at OCSLA, now located in our Eastham building. This will include cake, historical artifacts, a presentation, and general celebrations! You won't want to miss out on this huge, once in a great while (150 years, to be precise) celebration! Learn more on our website: www.ocsd62.org/150-year-celebration.

After reading the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, students in Mrs. Shortt’s 5th grade class talked about how they would leave their mark in a positive way at John McLoughlin. They then created their own dots, showing that no two dots are the same, representing that all of our students will leave a different mark on us and on the world!
Our proposed bond measure has three priority areas we are hoping to address with our 2024 proposed bond:
Safe, Secure, and Accessible Schools
Repair and Update Aging Buildings
Expand Student Opportunities and Student Supports
This graphic shows the ages of our aging school buildings. These schools all received new secure vestibule entries and front offices with the 2018 bond, but otherwise have largely remained untouched since their original build. Here is a list of our elementary schools and the ages they were built.
Beavercreek Elementary - 1948 (76 years old)
Candy Lane Elementary - 1966 (55 years old)
Gaffney Lane Elementary - 1965 (59 years old)
Holcomb Elementary - 1966 (55 years old)
John McLoughlin Elementary - 1975 (49 years old)
Redland Elementary - 1948 (76 years old)

After reading the book It's Okay to be Different, fourth graders created artwork to match the style of both the book's message and illustrations. Students were asked to finish the sentence: "It's okay to_________". We make our school community a welcoming place to be when we embrace our differences. -Ms. Flynn's class
It takes all kinds.
Our schools need you as a volunteer. We depend on your help as a volunteer.
People volunteer for all kinds of reasons, so we have all kinds of roles too!
Apply to be a volunteer and we'll find a role that fits!
Our volunteer process does take a little bit of time to complete, so starting it now will ensure you're able to help out as soon as possible.
It's important to renew your volunteer application. Volunteers must be approved each year before they can start volunteering within our buildings.
OCSD has recently moved the volunteer renewal date to October 1, allowing more time for previously approved volunteers to renew their application.
New volunteers who are wanting to start volunteering as soon as possible are encouraged to fill out the volunteer application early so that there is time for it to be processed and approved.
To apply, please visit: www.ocsd62.org/volunteer
You may have heard that we have a proposed bond measure on the November 2024 ballot, but did you know that this was all part of a long-range facilities plan?
In 2003, OCSD began a three phased approach to updating and upgrading our schools; making buildings safe, secure, and accessible. The 2003 bond created a new high school for our community, and in 2018, we came together to renovate our two middle schools while also providing critical security updates in every school in the district. For both of these bonds, the projects were completed on time and on budget.
Although we've made significant progress in our district, our six elementary schools have challenges. The average age of our six elementary schools is 62 years and our two oldest schools are 76 years old. These schools have not been updated sine they were originally built and have basic building systems like plumbing, heating, and air conditioning that are failing.
As we look to the third phase, we seek to address these significant health, safety, and educational inadequacies in our district's six elementary schools with a proposed bond measure on the November 2024 ballot.

Happy first week of school! We’ve had an amazing week learning about new classrooms, meeting new friends and getting back into the routine of school. We are so excited to have a GREAT school year!
Have you heard? We have a proposed bond measure on the November 2024 ballot!
Here are 6 things to know:
1. It is on the November 2024 ballot.
2. If passed, the district will receive a $6 million matching grant from the state.
3. If passed, 100% of bond funds would be used locally for Oregon City school.
If the proposed bond passes, it would:
4. Fund new air conditioning systems, update classrooms, and increase accessibility at all Oregon City elementary schools
5. Repair and update aging and inefficient building systems in all six elementary schools
6. Expand student opportunities with flexible learning spaces as well as additional Career and Technical Education (CTE) areas and field upgrades at Oregon City High School.

Today we celebrate another last day of school. As always, our day starts with a cheerful and lively welcome with music and a few dance moves. Around campus students were signing yearbooks and memory books. Our amazing teachers made this a memorable day for students with fun crafts and activities. Mrs. Flynn presented our 5th grade helpers with recognition awards for being role models and helpers for our younger students. We ended the day by sending off our 5th graders with the annual clap-out. As we always say, “Once a Superstar, Always a Superstar.” Happy Summer Everyone!
Today we had our annual Field Day! A big shout-out to our PE teacher Mrs. Long for thinking outside the box and designing a spectacular experience that met the needs of all our students. Students were able to “self-select” the games they wanted to play and also had the liberty of moving freely from one activity to another. We utilized the entire field leaving ample space around each game, so no one felt crowded. A big thank you to all our volunteers who supported us in making this day possible. What a great way to end the year!
We are proud to announce that John McLoughlin is officially a No Place for Hate School! A huge thank you to Mrs. Flynn, our counselor, Mrs Berry, and our No Place for Hate Committee for making this happen! At our last assembly, Mrs. Flynn and our student committee designed a presentation to share the exciting news. Mrs. Flynn presented us with our official banner and recognition and the students led the school in reciting our pledge. In order to become a No Place for Hate school, we established a committee with both students and adults to implement school wide activities of belonging and acceptance. The committee also helped us create our school pledge and assess our overall school climate. Thank you again to all our teachers and students for helping make John McLoughin a No Place for Hate school!

We had a great time at Bingo Night sponsored by our PTSO. A huge thank you to all our family and staff volunteers. I also want to thank Oregon City High School’s Honors Society for always volunteering for our school events. Our pre-order Bingo Night Packages were a big hit with families. It was a fun family night out, and we enjoyed spending time together. Thank you to all our amazing families who came to support our event.
Third graders have been working hard completing the writing process. They chose a famous person that they found inspiring or wanted to learn more about. They spent time researching, taking notes, drafting and then publishing a biography. As an extension, students created replicas of their famous person. They worked with their families to create these masterpieces. I am so proud of their creativity, hard work, and enthusiasm for learning new things!
~Mrs. Branch
Fourth Grade students LOVE vertical math boards! We have been busy using our vertical math boards to problem-solve a variety of math equations and word problems! Each student is a part of a 3 person math group dynamic that is given a problem to solve in a variety of ways. Each group can decide who will be responsible for showing a specific method (number line, model, equation, etc) they can use to solve the equation they are given. We have also been working collaboratively to learn how to best support each person in our group, and learning from each other, especially as they consistently change each day.
Wrapping up Certified Staff Appreciation Week...
Enjoy a few more pictures!
Day 5 of 5. THANK YOU!!
Fifth grade students have been studying, researching, and creating explorer reports. Students love the last step in the project, to be able to work in groups to create a life size poster! Finished projects will be on display at JME Art Night, June 4th!
